PSP-4000 Due This Year?

Retailer Geo seems to think so.

Rumors of a new PSP were hot and thick like southern style gravy before Sony began its most recent E3 press briefing, but as you might have noted, nothing as pyrotechnic as a new handheld was unveiled. Regardless, the non-announcement hasn't spelled the end to new hardware whispers. And the fact that a Japanese retailer (via MTV Multiplayer) has listed a new PSP handheld isn't helping matters.

Retailer Geo has listed a PSP-4000 model for 2010, providing no detail. But one can gather from the name that the device will use UMDs, perhaps signaling that the PSPGo all-digital revolution is beginning to end with a whimper despite recent pushes.

Not a PSP-4000.
Not a PSP-4000.

It's possible that Geo has it wrong--the retailer might have listed the device in some sort of horrible error. As Siliconera notes, Geo also has the Nintendo 3DS pegged as a 2010-bound device, which might or might not be incorrect. Reggie Fils-Aime, at least, doesn't believe the Nintendo handheld will hit stands until 2011. There's also the fact that Geo has Pokemon: Black/White's release date apparently wrong, too.

Looking for a new PSP? I'm currently in Tennessee right now and enjoying my iPad on the road as opposed to my PSPgo. Funny story: I actually forgot that I even owned that PSPgo until I started packing boxes in preparation for my current cross-country adventure. Considering this, I don't think a PSP-4000 is in my future.

Is there a quest for being first?  I'm still much more excited about the 3DS than any Sony handheld at this point.

Geo is fucking with us :/

I'm going to hold out for the PSP 2, even if it never comes. My PSP 1000 does what I want a PSP to do, when I want it.

I wants a PSP2 sooo bad......And that is why I thought the Sony press confrence sucked....

@JMartNWA: I believe it's only for videos

What's wrong with buying an iPad?

@JMartNWA: really bro? "nice"? what in this article is nice? it's about a platform that is about to be completely useless when the 3DS comes out.

Who needs games when you have a sassy teen spokesman?

how about ditching the psp entirely and starting out with a fresh, more accessible psp2 hand-held? i haven't played mine since the year it launched and find the controls to be tedious at best with the one analog stick (which only works on say, 3ds because you will be using the touch pen with the other hand... though psp SHOULD have 2). if the 3ds launches later this year they'll be in even more strife than they already are with the regular ds killing them in sales.

Wouldn't it be smarter to just start developing a PSP2?
paulungaon June 30, 2010 at 4:59 p.m.
@pyromaster222:  There are plenty good PSP games for people don't have a PSP yet (like myself). I'm already planning what 20 games I'll get first once I buy my PSP-3000.

@Faint: @Beforet: My theory is that the PSP has been a failure financially, (the specs of the original PSP were pretty high for their time, especially when compared to the price it sold for) so they're trying to wring every cent they can out of the division before they develop something new. Its the only reason why holding off on a PSP2 would make any sense, at least the way I see it.

i don't get it.  Why doesn't sony create New hardware as a proper upgrade to the psp hardware. How are they possibly boosting sales by making different scews of psp hardware.

This story has a lot of maybes, possibly-s, coulds, he-said-she-saids, and rumors. Which leaves me not caring.

Nice alittle jab at the PSPgo at the end there. Classy news reporting.

Dig Deeper into PSP

PlayStation Portable (PSP) is Sony's first entry into the handheld gaming market. Several newer revisions have been released; the PSP-2000, 3000, PSPgo and the PSP-E1000. The system also sports multimedia features including an online store, music and video playback, photo viewer, and comics reader.
