It's not actually in German, but Capcom dropped this new story-focused Resident Evil 5 trailer to go along with the Leipzig Games Convention. (There's also a better high-def version courtesy of GameTrailers.)

The fiction has never been Resident Evil's strongest suit--the story in 4 was pretty damn absurd, when you get down to it--so I'm not even going to try to figure out who the dude in the cloak is here, or whether that raven-haired femme fatale is supposed to be Ada Wong or not. The best things about RE4 were the shooting and the balls-to-the-wall action moments, and it looks like that stuff is still here in spades, so I'm satisfied. Honestly, Capcom can cobble together whatever hackneyed B-movie horror plot they want, as long as I get to keep gunning down creepy-ass zombies and monsters in eerie environments. Come to think of it, there's a little too much sunshine in this clip. Needs more nighttime!

What I do care about is how RE5 plays. It was one of my most-wanted games going into E3, but sitting down with it I was reminded that, as much as RE4 modernized third-person shooters back in early '05, the genre has progressed even more since then--and RE5 in its current incarnation hasn't kept up. The demo version at Capcom's booth played exactly like RE4--you still can't move while in aiming mode, and you rotate on an axis to turn your character instead of being able to strafe with the move stick and control the camera independently. After RE4 flipped the script so much, the adherence to tradition in 5 was disappointing to me. Then again, post-show scuttlebutt made it sound like the team is considering some radical changes, so I wouldn't be surprised to see more conventional third-person controls in there before release. Hopefully we'll find out more at Tokyo Game Show. The team has till next March to change things up, after all.

What about you? If Resident Evil 5 is just a prettier RE4 and relies on the same gameplay and control conventions, will that be enough for you? Does the gameplay need to catch up with Gears of War 2 and Dead Space to catch your interest?

The standard for story telling in games is so low, saying a series is the equivalent of B-horror movie is a complement.

christ how many times are they going to show the same beginning part of the trailer. I like the resident evil apocalypse moments though

I personally wouldnt mind resident evil 5 being similar to resident evil 4 in terms of how it plays. I honestly loved the way resident evil 4 played and I still have just as much fun playing with that mechanic than I do with something like Gears of War. The main thing is whether its fun to play with.

Resident evil 4 is sure as hell fun for me to play in spite of playing games like gears of war. Im gonna be brave and tell you all that resident evil 4 is a much better game than gears of war. Yeah, I said it.

Yep, it looks like RE4 but prettier. I'm ok with that since I love RE4 so much.

The movement/aiming has never bothered me, do people forget about the 180 turn? because thats what i find useful

It seems like Dead Space was more impressive amongst the media at E3, than RE5 was. Even though RE5 is 4 with a prettier look, I do love the fact that is has coop going for it. Regardless, I am eagerly waiting for both titles!

That's only one game series, I was speaking as a whole. I've played through several Final Fantasy's, all Metal Gear Solid games, and those have great narratives. But a couple of game series isn't much compared to the entire game industry. If you compare mediocre narratives in games to mediocre narratives in movies, and books, you'll find a large gap. Gamesplay should always be the star, but I was merely pointing out my opinion on story's.

i think id rather play a RE4 type game anyway, simply because of the huge amout of other 3rd person shooters that are like GoW or the awesome looking Dead Space. and the ridiculous story/ epic one liners made RE4 that much better.

I'll play it no matter what.

I really hated RE4's stop 'n' pop gameplay and so far, everything I've seen from the game mirrors RE4. The controls, the enemies, even the level layout seem to resemble the structure of RE4. This new trailer looks a more intriguing than all the gameplay footage from E3, but I think I'm gonna pass until it hits bargain price no matter what score it gets (which I believe will be 5 stars).

I guarantee the dude in the cloak is either Wesker or... probably Wesker.

Being an RE fan, tolerating dated controls isn't exactly a new thing. But what bothers me most about the stuff on RE5 is how focused it seems on action. Granted much of the tension in RE4 was achieved by throwing stuff in your face and escalating that danger, but I always regarded the last pieces of the game to be kind of stale because of how far they pushed that stuff. By the end all the subtly had left. All these trailers make RE5 seem geared that way from the get go. So with dated controls and all the subtly of the series gone, what's really there to distinguish it?

I wouldnt be that bothered if the gameplay mechanics stayed the same, I was happy with them in RE4.

Some of the new environments look really good (especially the section where it's raining) and the action looks top-notch. Can't wait to get my hands on this one!

I think it's a little unfair to say the gameplay needs to "catch up" to GoW.  I like the fact that the games differentiate between each other.

I would not really mind if they kept it the same as RE4 as long as they don't mess up the Co-op for Xbox Live then I am sold!!!
