Rockstar Games' L.A. Noire Hitting May 17

Hey, that sounds like a perfect time for an open-world crime thriller.

Doing anything this summer? No? Great, because here’s a game you can check out: L.A. Noire, Rockstar Games’ open-world crime thriller, hits North American store shelves on May 17, 2011 for the Xbox 360 and PS3. A European release on both consoles will follow three days later on May 20, 2011.

Rockstar confirmed these dates earlier this morning after a leaked trailer let the US release date slip in advance of its marketing department’s wishes. You can view it now in all its “official” glory just below.

L.A. Noire is a Team Bondi-developed game, and an ambitious one at that. According to reports, the title has a 300-page script and focuses as much on character and narrative as your typical, loosey-goosey Rockstar Games open-world joint. Team Bondi has put a lot of effort into the facial motion capture for the game, which theoretically should make for some interesting conversations and such.

The game's story revolves around a cop named Cole Phelps, a do-gooder with a secret who's fresh out of World War II. As Phelps, you’ll investigate and solve crimes and also deal with a police department steeped in scandals during the 1940s. L.A. Noire is the second May release in a row for Rockstar, who also shipped Red Dead Redemption around the same time last year.
