You've changed, man. It's like I don't even know you anymore!
You've changed, man. It's like I don't even know you anymore!
Between both Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix coming to consoles soon, as well as the imminent release of Street Fighter: The Awful Movie on Blu-Ray, now's a great time to look back and both cringe and laugh at some of the series' missteps. Always up for some self-deprecation, Capcom's own Chris Kramer dug up an excellent feature on the Japanese site IT Media that provides a visual history of the evolution of Ryu.

I could try and act like I know what I'm talking about with observations about the way the Street Fighter Alpha art style would go on to influence future incarnations, but really, this is just an opportunity to ridicule that original Street Fighter art. Say what you want about the creative bankruptcy of today's video games, that is just embarrassing.

What the?! Ryu is that you?!
Original Ryu is the best - Hadouken!
ReTarDedFisHy likes the fact that there's a video game based on a movie based on a game.

Ryu looks crazy in the picture that accompanies this story... I think its because his eyes are looking separate directions... Oh and the hair... oh and that scowl... Oh and...

I hate to say it but I prefer the street fighter 2 look of Ryu over the street fighter 4.

Man WTH?!  Am I the only person on the planet who LOVED the Street Fighter movie?!  I mean it going to Blu Ray is like the 2nd coming!

Ok yea, everyone involved in that movie esp the writer, and casting agent need to be shot.  Dear god, at least the MK movies were watchable to where i didnt have crippling head aches, and I didnt want to burn the images from my eyes with a blow torch.  Sad;y that was a failed attempt, thou I am blind I can stll see!

That first picture looks like it could have doubled for Sonic the Hedgehog concept art.

The link to the visual evolution of Ryu does not work.

Milkman, try opening it in a new window/tab.  Worked fine for me that way.

The earliest Ryu looks worst, but the most recent one looks pretty shitty also. The one with liquid dripping from Ruy's face and Chun-Li holding her mouth like she's about to vomit is unforgivably bad, unlike the first one which can be forgiven.

I remember SF the Movie the Game on my Saturn. The characters looked atrocious. I'm all for an HD remake!

Man and I always thought Ryu was the most awesome character in SF. You've ruined my freakishly idolizing image of him!

....Thank you!

LOL thats pretty funny; it's cool to see the so called 'evolution' of Ryu... not too much of a fan on the latest incarnation though...

Wow, thats cool.  Not really 15 different looks though.  The younger version looks so gay.  And the first one is so weird looking but kind of bad ass.  The best one is obviously the second one and the third one, both seem more reminiscent of the street fighter 2 ryu.

the very first one looks like its completely american art, which i find sort of tastefully ironic :)
