C'mon Nintendo, we know they're coming.
C'mon Nintendo, we know they're coming.
Jeff made that offhand remark in the office yesterday, apropos of nothing in particular, just because nearly 24 months after the Wii's launch it is actually still rather difficult to find the damn thing at retail. They only had one of them left, he says, but there it sat unclaimed on the shelf, waiting for someone to give it a happy home. I bet it didn't last long.

There's a number of reasons I still don't own a Wii yet (where's the fruit-flavored rainbow of other-colored consoles, Nintendo?), but lack of hardware availability is the main culprit. Lack of exciting software is the other side of that coin. If there were any games out on the system since last year's holiday season a guy like me could get excited about, I would have invested more effort in tracking one down. But as the lineup stands, it's just not worth the effort to me to find a Wii. (It's been a long time since Mario Galaxy and No More Heroes.)

Getting a console might finally require slightly less effort soon, according to this quote on holiday Wii availability from an interview MTV Multiplayer did with GameStop's Bob McKenzie.

Our look from Nintendo...is that it will be much, much better than it has been the last two years. I can’t say we will be in stock every day throughout the holiday season but I can tell you that the current flow we’ve seen coming from Nintendo on Wii hardware makes us very confident that we will meet the business model that we’ve got.

That actually jives with this analyst report I found from a year and a half ago stating the Wii supply problems would persist through 2009. So it's not like we weren't warned. And as far as the dearth of hardcore-focused Wii games is concerned, it seems that this slow ramp-up on console supply might actually coincide with some new games you'll actually want to play after all.

Well if anything, the Wii is a great party console... but I agree, not so much for the hardcore gamer..

'We'll meet the business model that we've got'... which is to totally not supply enough wii's for everybody.

You dont need the wii if you got a 360.  Rock band is pretty much the best party game and the best version in on the PS3 or 360, so no need for a party console.

There were like 5 just sitting behind the glass door at my local Wal-Mart, and for the 3 or 4 months I've had one I've spent maybe only 4 hours playing it... yeah... then again I do love me some Animal Crossing.

The Wii should have been the death of Nintendo, or at the very least, their living-room-console efforts. They were simply extremely clever with it's marketing efforts and targeting an audience of impulse-purchasing "family people."

Only time will tell if their shift of target demographic and marketing strategies will keep them going. If this was GameCube 2, they'd already be dead.

I saw no less than 6 at two different Targets a few weeks ago, and it wasn't even when they were just opening, but the middle of a weekday.

I hope it just shows that people are finally discovering it's all hype, and that it's really a piece of shit system, with lazy developers cashing in on stupid people that will buy anything to shut their kids up.

Outside of 2-3 games that are at best pretty good, the only thing it really has going for it is Virtual Console.  I've easily spent more than I did for the "system" on old games I either never had or sold long ago.  The whole import channel alone is where some serious craziness has come to light.  The sheer fact that anyone can now play Cho Aniki on the Wii is unfathomable.  Some serious love of the PC Engine is going on there and I love it.

Not  a great system for single players. Awesome when sharing the joy of swinging into the air some plastic remotes with others.
I think I have played mine for like 2 hours by myself.
I got it at lauch day.

I heard Nintendo has some kind of reveal in October, so I'm not giving up hope yet. I mean, there's got to be something big in the works... Nintendo's whole philosophy is to not stay in one place too long (or so they say). I kind of hope that they re-release the console with improvements (sort of like DS lite coming out after the original DS). Or at least come out with some groundbreaking game, device or something that will stimulate third party developers to switch to them.

The Wii for me its the MarioOldiesCheapie Machine, so its like one of those game they sell that has some atari games on it, that you plug in your tv, maybe youll have some fun, but at the end of the day you have to return to de 360's and ps3's
