Trophy support, guaranteed!
Trophy support, guaranteed!
Support for Sony's PlayStation 3 trophy system has been pretty sketchy so far. I imagine this is due in no small part to the fact that up to this point, trophies have been entirely optional. I had heard grumblings from developers at E3 that it wasn't going to stay that way for long. Sure enough, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has, according to videogamer.com, stated that trophy support will be a mandatory feature for all new PlayStation 3 releases as of January 2009. Considering that this has been the case with achievements on the Xbox 360 since day one, it only makes sense, though I have to wonder if this will have an effect on the release dates of PS3 games set for Q1 09.

This is certainly a minor step in the right direction for the PlayStation 3, but it also feels like Sony's still playing catch-up. What say you, multiplatform owners? Does consistent trophy support give the PlayStation 3 version an edge?

It sucks when you see a multiplat release comes out with no trophy support. Look at MKvsDC. No trophies. Why the hell not?

Trophies do not give an edge to PS3 games. It will make them equal to Xbox360 games in that respect. However, there will be other aspects of the game that will determine who has the edge. Graphics+controls+online system+ number of disks+load times+ price+exclusive content.

Finally!  By "grumblings", do you mean that developers are annoyed by mandatory trophies on PS3?  Can the PS3 trophies mirror X360 achievements or do MSFT and Sony have rules against that?

I feel quite sad saying this but I don't think I would evem consider buying a PS3 at this point and to be honest the biggest reason is that I wouldn't buy multiplatform games because they don't have achievements,  That's pretty bad huh?  To be fair the other big reason is that the PS3 has much worse online support, that completely puts me off having okayed my 360 for so long

I dont really care for this whole ''trophy/achievements'' stuff, even though its nice to have, i'd rather have devs put extra polish into the ps3 version instead.

PS3 had the edge before, in my opinion. Damn, I hate achievements. I have 1,715 "accidental" achievement points. Obviously no one really cares about my opinion so I will just sum it up with... They are pointless.

I wouldn't say an edge, but it keeps the PS3 up to par with the xbox360. Now instead of just playing the game through, gamers have another incentive to achieve challenges to get those trophies.

Incrediblebulk, you have your right to an opinion, but you're welcoming bashing with fanboy comments like that.  PS3 has much worse online support?  How so?  You back your statement up with NO facts and not even an OPINION.  So XBL has game invites.  You also now have a XMB-like setup on XBL that red rings systems and locks up the console for most owners.  Read any of the Sony press releases and you'll realize they going to be caught up in features and beyond with Home looming for the US.

Packfan104L4: there is a big difference in the online support side of things, the video aspect is the biggest, streaming netflix movies is the bomb. also there are many people on the PS3 that still dont use mics, i hate playing in a room with no mics. and if you look at atleast the US sales Data, the 360 is still pulling away each month that it is out. and as far as features go, the 360 with the NXE is taking the next massive leap to become a multi media powerhouse.
IMO

I don't think it gives the PS3 version an edge, it just kind of takes away the arguement for buying a game for 360 for achievements.

I don't think it gives the PS3 version an edge but as only a PS3 owner at least it doesn't make me feel I being screwed out of an extra feature.  It feels all this is taking way to long though it took a year for frame rates and other performance issues to be somewhat equal 6 months to mandate trophies and 2 years later I'm still waiting for custom soundtracks other then Burnout.

My gamer score is over 30 000 on xbox there is no way I am going to invest that kind of time in to the PS3.  I only have a PS3 for the blu ray and the exclusive titles (which up until recently there weren't too many).

Say I?  Nay.
I used to give a rat arse about Achievements back when it was a new idea, it felt like something at the time.  It felt like the old high score board with friends names above your own.
Then developers started throwing in any old crud, and some lunatics suddenly felt that "they had a right" to be able to get all achievements in a bought game without effort.  The word achievement somehow lost it's meaning on them.

For anyone who forgot, it means you achieved something.

So adding Trophies to PS3 games is if anything Sony trying not to admit that Microsoft were onto something good (albeit for a while) and all it is doing now is aping a Pretty Little Pretend Badge System, and has no real value at all now the challenge has been removed.

The rats may now keep their arses.

Multi-platform owner opinion:  I wouldn't say for sure it gives it an EDGE.  Since I play games for FUN and not to get points to show off.  It does make u wanna play the games a little bit more thoroughly, I would think.

I have no use for trophies, achievements, or gold stars.

I don't see why they grumble about it being mandatory on PS3. It already is on the XBox and you know they are just gonna port the same tasks over for the trophies. Doesn't really seem like that much of an extra bother to me.

It's definitely something nice. It will help me keep the PS3 in mind when I make some of those multiplatform game purchases.

I have to admit, trophies are starting to grow on me. Not nearly as much as achievements but they're getting up there.

Well put Nailer.

Look at PAIN, Mirror's Edge, and Resistance 2, and Warhawk trophies.  Anyone that can pull off the highest rank trophy there, I tip my hat to them, cuz DAMN that takes a LONG time.  Same with Resistance.  I'm only 500 kills toward the 10k kill gold trophy.
