This is my red-ringed Xbox! There are many others like it, but this one is mine!
This is my red-ringed Xbox! There are many others like it, but this one is mine!
While all around me has been chaos, I've had a pretty good run with my Xbox 360 hardware. While everyone was running around like maniacs, investigating the Xbox 360's supposedly shoddy hardware, I was sort of quietly hanging out at home, getting achievement points and wondering what the big deal was.

Well, today's the day I join the rest of the world. My 360 Elite decided that the multiplayer mode of Quantum of Solace was too much for it to handle, so it locked up, filling the screen with a checkerboard pattern of static. I got it to come back up after that, but it locked up while I was looking at my avatar. After that, it refused to acknowledge that I had the Bond game installed to the hard drive of my 360 and tried to run it off the disc. So I deleted the installed game and went to reinstall it. At around 25 percent, the 360 essentially said "dude, what did I tell you about this James Bond nonsense? He's a spy! Shouldn't he be doing spy stuff instead of running around in a first-person shooter? Going third-person when you take cover doesn't count, either! That's just so they can show off their Daniel Craig model! I swear, this is all GoldenEye's fault!" Then the screen went black.

Red rings, baby. Three of 'em.

I... might be putting words into my 360's now-silent mouth. I can't remember for sure, everything happened so fast.

The awesome part about having it break tonight is that the Microsoft customer support center is currently working on upgrades. So you can't register consoles or file new repairs until tomorrow. When it rains, it rains, brothers and sisters. When it rains, it rains.

Oh, pours? Well, whatever. You get what I'm saying.

This is the first 360 that I've owned that's given up on me, but I guess it's technically my second or third Xbox. Weirdly enough, the console I got a week or two before the system's official launch is still totally trucking, despite it now being used as a mobile loaner to friends whenever someone else's stops working. Speaking of which, Ryan, I need my Xbox back. My Japanese 360 is still going strong, I think. I don't know, I never really use it. Though I did buy Raiden IV when we were in Tokyo... guess I could finally bust that out and give it a try. Whatever, I'm going to bust out my launch-era PlayStation 1 and swap trick it to play some Tobal 2. Now that's a game, damn it.

To add injury to annoyance, that now-broken console is whitelisted for the NXE preview. So if I slap that hard drive onto any other system, it'll take the NXE update and be unable to get online for the next two weeks. That means I need to figure out where my old 20GB drive is and find a memory card, since memory cards apparently won't transmit the NXE updates to other consoles.

Whatever, I won't cry and moan about it, since everyone's been hearing people bitch about the 360 hardware issues for years now. I think that's one part of all this that worked out in Microsoft's favor--the problem went on so long and got so bad that everyone got fed up with all the people complaining about it more than they got fed up with the actual hardware issues.

Still... pretty bad timing. Oh well, I didn't really want to spend the rest of the night playing Quantum of Solace, anyway. Seems kind of dry.

That is a downer. But it has to be said still - the hardware is garbage. Despite all the great games and the stuff it can do, 360 reliability has been terrible. I am on my 3rd. I only keep coming back because of warranties and free repairs. Despite some games I want to play, if I had another breakdown that wasn't covered, and I had to pay for a repair or new console myself,  I would probably ditch the 360 altogether....better luck on the next 360, Jeff.....

Yeah, Microsoft messed up terribly with the hardware this generation. I'm surprised you were able to make it this long without a red ring. I've got Quantum of Solace on the way from Gamefly. I hope I don't find it as dry as you do.  =(

Bummer. Pretty horrible timing too, although I guess the only 360 exclusives left for the year are Banjo-Kazooie and Left 4 Dead

Wow, number 5? Andre I feel so fucking bad for you. I just wouldn't want to deal with that at all.

Welcome to the club.  I finally got my rings in July.  The unit they sent me started having E74 errors right from the start.  Now its back and doing fine, so far.  It'll probably last just long enough for the warranty to expire...

Love the "This is my X! There are many like/this one/mine", I say it all the time. Still haven't got an X360, Dead Rising makes me come close to wanting one, but GTA IV is less than 2 weeks away, so fuck it, maybe when the next generation arrives. Seriously, it is all kind of weak that people actually accept that a console they buy is entirely likely to die on them.

I had to return mine for the DVD drive crap out problem. but I'm looking at getting one of those Japanese value bundles with Ace Combat and Katamari packed in. I'm hoping the combination of NXE and Jasper motherboard will protect that one from future F'ups, Also I need a 360 with HDMI.

Look on the bright side, at least Jeff finished Gears 2 TWICE before he lost his box. I'd like to play it once.

I still have my original launch console running.  It may have gotten the red rings about 5 times, but there are ways to keep it alive.   Even though its a hassle I never really have a good time to have it sent off for repair, so I guess ill just keep working my magic till the damn thing stops turning on.

Sorry to hear about the RRoD Jeff.  The hardware sucks ass but the games and free repairs just about evens it up.

My brother's on his 3rd Xbox 360, whereas I'm still on my first.

The only problems I've had with the 360 just started cropping up.  The DVD laser lens seems to be nearing the end of its life and will occasionally give me DDEs for no reason.  The NXE update is a welcome addition that may extend the life of my console til the next generation drops.  My roommate has had two RRoD on the other hand.  So...electronics karma, perhaps?

My launch 360 red ringed months ago, so I Walmart switcharoo'd it for the Falcon board one. It's still working fine, have yet to have any real issues at all... Still, once this holiday season is up, I'm gonna switcharoo it again. Jasper board all the way! Maybe that'll make sure it actually lasts...

One reason why I'm holding out and saving up for a PS3 until Microsoft stops screwing around and brings the xbox 360 up to today's quality standards.

@WholeFnShow: People buy pets too.  They definitely die, and some of them cost more than a console.  It's the joy you have with them that makes the experience, and heartache, worth repeating.
