Way more excited about this than I should be.
Way more excited about this than I should be.
As lazy as I sometimes find the video-game industry's use of nostalgia as a crutch, even my granite-hard heart isn't impervious to its rose-tinted allure. For a long time, one of the purest sources for high-grade nostalgia stimulants has been Club Nintendo, a consumer reward program though which you exchange points earned by purchasing Nintendo products for various trinkets that often recall both the most memorable and esoteric bits of Nintendo's past. And, for a long time, Club Nintendo hasn't been available in the US, increasing both the rarified air around the program, as well as my frustrated longing for its prizes.

I believe I actually squealed and clapped when Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway revealed that Club Nintendo was coming to the US at its pre-TGS press event, and in an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Dunaway has revealed a few more details about how the program will work stateside. In addition to stating that Club Nintendo will be up and running in the US before the end of the year, she made the important distinction that it will be more like its Japanese counterpart--which rewards you with physical goods--than the European one, where the rewards tend towards desktop wallpaper and ringtones. Dunaway goes on to mention that the rewards will be a blend of Club Nintendo stuff that's been available in Japan, as well as some unique stuff for the US, though no specific word yet on what you'll actually get. The fundamental idea of rewarding loyal customers this way is pretty appealing to me. It seems oddly old-fashioned, reminding me in a way of the old Activision patch program, though with way less amateur TV photography and jean jacket potential.

Yeah, I was a member of the European one when I was still in Europe and it was rather rubbish.  Free ringtones?  Um, no.... no thanks.
This could work out really cool.  I'm sure they won't make any more but I want a SNES classic controller!

This seems cool, I'm always up for little things that I'll never use except to show off to my nerd friends!

@irishjohn: Yeah, It's up there. That sounds cool, I hope they have something at least half as decent for Australia.

The European Club Nintendo "store" has actually changed in recent years, and is now mostly Nintendo trinkets, some GBA games and items of clothing. And a lot of wii fit branded crap...

i like the idea of trnsfering your 'stars' into wiiware points, even if it takes 1600 stars for 400 points....after all the economy is in the shitter.

Sure... Who cares about the Europeans right? We're just a small continent attached to Asia after all!

Of course... they do this now. I almost never dust off the wii to play any games on it. Hopefully Sin and punishment 2 coughs up alot of points for this. I want that SNES controller! and I hope they give credit for past games not just new ones...

Even I rarely buy Nintendo games anymore, all they put out currently are those stupid casual games such as Wii Music and Wii Fit. I just need something they released in the GameCube days, hopefully next year will be more like that.

It's a shame I don't register games on nintendo.com anymore, it seems all the first party nintendo games are not my thing anymore.

OK, reality check time. Can anyone tell me if any of this is actually happening? I've got a loose grip on reality after hearing about this upcoming 2D digitized fighting game.
