Video Game News, Stories and Updates for the PS3, XBOX 360, PC, PSP, Wii, and DS

If you're like me, you're...well, you'd rather be sitting on the couch in your underwear right now. Also you didn't play The Witcher, the apparently quite good PC action-RPG from Polish developer CD Projekt RED. For some reason, PC-based RPGs tend to scare me away. Maybe it's the idea of having to pore over all those scary numbers while sitting upright at a desk. That sounds a little too much like work. There's a reason I didn't become an accountant.

OK, maybe that's a little harsh. But anyway, people like you and I will soon get to enjoy The Witcher in a more couch-friendly format, since Atari has announced a port of the game to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 called The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf. Sounds like it's the same storyline as the original, though the press release promises "a brand new combat system for thrilling dynamic action, and a new engine delivering matchless state-of-the-art visuals." Here's a CG-only trailer that shows none of that.

Also, there's a quote from Phil Harrison! Remember that guy?

"The creative vision and dedication to the quality of the player experience that CD Projekt RED bring to the Witcher games is extraordinary, and it’s great to be working with them to bring the Witcher universe to console gamers," said Phil Harrison, President of Infogrames Entertainment, the parent company of Atari. "Taking this brilliantly realised world to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gamers for the first time is a breakthrough in the development of this important franchise."

Phil Harrison strikes me as a guy who Gets Stuff Done. Atari seems to be on the up and up all of a sudden, having picked up the new Riddick game, Ghostbusters, and this console version of The Witcher. I'm curious to see how well this port is adapted to consoles. It's out in "autumn" of next year.

I hope they adapt the game's mechanic to the consoles well. The mouse gameplay was ok, but will not be great on the consoles.

If they do a good job with the console version I might just buy this game... again.

I wonder if the combat system will include the a Karateka-style, single-hit = death vulnerability...

Sounds promising, though that trailer was a little stupid.  Still, it was a good core game so this should be fun.

I have to say, although like Brad I missed this one on PC, I may very well pick it up on 360 when its available. Although it's a ways away, hopefully that is so that they can properly port this game over to consoles without making it clunky or having it suffer from frame rate issues. Hmmmm, sitting on the couch in my underwear playing games does in fact sound like a good time right about now...

You're not gonna be able to mod the porn and gore back in though (censored from US), unlike the PC version, not to mention a downgrade in graphics.  Still... this great game needs some exposure.

I'll buy it again, probably and play it for the third time. I really like the game and I'm curious to see how it translates to the consoles.

I heard great things about the PC version, but never got to play it since I had an ancient PC up until late August when I got my new laptop.  I am eagerly awaiting this port to consoles.

Great, one of the few PC games that I was interested in; now I finally get to play one of them. Still crossing my fingers for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I watched some gameplay videos of this at the time, I thought it looked really bad =/
And it also seemed to be selling itself on the promise of some crappy softcore pr0nz.

Great news. I've always wanted to play it.
