POOOOOINTS!
POOOOOINTS!
The achievement tracking feature we rolled out back in May has proven to be pretty popular with you guys. It's probably one of my favorite things about Giant Bomb, and it's only gotten better over time. In addition to tracking your Xbox 360 profiles and World of Warcraft accounts, we're now keeping stats on PC games that use Steam to offer achievements. And I'm hoping that we'll be able to get PlayStation 3 trophies in the mix in the relatively near future. All of this gives us a great deal of data to play with, and we're thinking about different ways to let you play with it down the line.

So I figured I'd share some statistics with you that I found pretty interesting. These figures cover data that goes all the way back to the mid-May launch of our achievement stuff. In the future, I'll be limiting the data to shorter timeframes so we can all see how it changes from week to week.

For starters, here are the top five achievement lists on Giant Bomb. Whether people are searching on Google or just navigating the site directly, these are the five full achievement lists that you've been asking for more than any others.

  1. Prototype
  2. Ghostbusters: The Video Game
  3. Red Faction: Guerrilla
  4. UFC 2009 Undisputed
  5. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10

Considering how well UFC seems to have been selling, I can't say I'm too surprised to see it up there. Also, it might say good things about Red Faction: Guerrilla's sales that it's already ahead of UFC, even though it hasn't been out for as long. After seeing the above list, I'm not too surprised to see achievements from some of those games on the most popular achievements list. Oh, and keep in mind that we've yet to build in proper support for secret achievements, which may skew the data a bit.

With that, these are the ten most popular individual achievements on Giant Bomb.

  1. Prototype - Self-Deception
  2. Ghostbusters: The Video Game - I Love You When You Rough-House!
  3. UFC 2009 Undisputed - World Class Grappler
  4. Prototype - Return Fire
  5. Prototype - Web Of Knowledge
  6. UFC 2009 Undisputed - Hall of Famer
  7. Fable II - The Fowl Player
  8. UFC 2009 Undisputed - That was easy!
  9. Ghostbusters: The Video Game - Ghostbusters Drinking Game
  10. Ghostbusters: The Video Game - Egon's Guinea Pig

Another DID YOU KNOW moment here. DID YOU KNOW that we allow people to comment on individual achievements? It's true! We've done this so that people can get in there and help each other out. So if you're working on The Fowl Player in Fable and can't figure out how to get the chicken suit, well, our achievement page happens to already have the answer. So sync up your accounts today, and if you've been waiting to get your PSN account and trophies up in there, hang tight. Hopefully we'll be able to have something for you before too long.

My favorite part about this feature is being able to comment on individual achievements: that was a great idea.

Kinda werid that I had the Tiger Woods page open when I clicked on this article. Then again those points are so dam hard to get it's no wonder that that page is being looked at a lot.

I can't wait to see what you guys do with this stuff in the future.

@Jeff: Since all of those seem to be Xbox 360 games/achievements, can I ask what the most popular games & achievements on steam are? And I'm not particularly interested, but I'm sure some people would be interested in the most popular WoW achievements too.

I am really liking the comments on each achievement, its nice to get tips on those hard to get ones. I just wish that there was no 'secret' achievements, Its impossible to tell what all my cool rare achievements are because they are all secret, but there isn't a lot you guys can do about that I suppose :P
Unless you went and built a database of all the achievement names, points, and descriptions and matched them with each secret achievement. It sucks though because itd have to be you guys doing that as far as I can figure because we have no way of telling which achievement is which. There must be a way!

I know it might seem silly, but I'd appreciate it if instances of "Xbox Live" on the achievement pages were changed to simply "Live". As I said, I know it's silly, but some of use use GFW Live and don't own a 360 and are annoyed by an automated system suggesting I do.

Since Steam hasn't been in as long as 360, the numbers are a bit skewed in favor of the 360. When I tighten it up to the last week of traffic, it'll probably start to even out a bit. The data isn't broken up in a way that makes it easy to search out specific games right now, but after giving it a glance, it seems that the most popular Steam achievement is...

...from Plants vs. Zombies.

Those are recent games so people are still playing them and want to know what the achievements are.

Those achievements are cool and all, but I think the achievement I personally want most is Smile in Geometry Wars 2.

I've got 890 from Ghostbusters right now.  Fun game.  Also, those top five games all happen to be the pages I've been refreshing for the last two days repeatedly.  = D

I think what he's hoping for, me as well, is not only an overall popular achievements but ones that are also specific to each service like WoW, Steam, Live and eventually PSN.

It'd be nice if on the achievement commentary page, if people get could points for being tagged as "helpful" or something, to encourage people to leave tips/strategies, or in the case of Secret Achievements, a description, too.
