    The NBA Jam of Hockey

NHL Hitz 20-02 was made from the company Midway, whom is known for making really great and phenomenal arcade games, much of them being quirky and really fun. NHL Hitz really stands up as a great game with over the top things happening on ice, and is pretty much just balls out ridiculous.

The is by no way a simulation of the sport. The game consists of NHL teams going face to face, and 3 on 3. The game will start out with the face off, then the action begins, the speed is significant and really fast paced. You take control of a player and control the puck as you normally would, but you have the ability the pull of spin moves, and shoot the puck at literally flaming speed, but the goalies are also no joke, as they can brutally take down any player near their space. You can make plays like regular hockey, and the general concept of hockey is still in play, just pretty much all of the rules, such as off sides and icings, etc are all stripped out. The size of the ice is very small compared to the real arenas, and feels more like the size of a bunk. But the gameplay feels really smooth, and runs a nice frame rate even when all of this crazy stuff is happening on screen. Once you score 3 goals with one player he will then start on fire, and if you get another three goals, he'll burst into blue flames which give him a speed boost and well, all around stat boost making him ultimate for a period of time. The control or gameplay isn't deep or confusing at all, making this one of the most accessible hockey games out there, and with its arcady fun, any one could have fun and get into NHL Hitz.

As like most hockey games, you can create your own team and player, then take them through a season, playing through 50 games, but you have to win the game before moving forward, and the difficulty doesn't steep to harshly, but does require the player to become more creative. The fighting in NHL Hitz is real arcady, and some what like the simulation games of the time, just more ridiculous, and whoever loses the fight is done for the rest of the game. You will notice scores most of the time going over double digits, as opposed to the 3-2 type scores of real hockey.

The only really bad thing about NHL Hitz is that Limp Bizkit is the only menu song, and man is that annoying, as Rollin was big at the time. But if you enjoy enjoy the Midway type of games, like NBA Jam, this is one game you will very likely have fun with. Also, just like NBA Jam, you don't even have to be a fan of hockey to like or have with with this game, I would recommend anyone to give this game a chance, and you could easily find this game for probably $5-$10.
