I don't really have an opinion of Nier and have no intention of playing it. But this is hilarious.

the point was a game shouldn't have such a tedious side activity and then require you to do it... i would have thought the game designers would have made the beach NEXT to the guy you get the fishing pole from the beach you get that stupid fish at too

But even still, he's blaming the game for something he did wrong.  If he went to the part marked on the map and did what he was supposed to do, this whole thing could've been avoided.  He was just being an idiot.  I'm not trying to say he's wrong about the game, but it's hardly fair to say "I'M NOT GOING TO KEEP PLAYING THIS GAME BECAUSE IT SUCKS BECAUSE THIS FORCED MECHANIC SUCKS" when you're just straight up doing the thing you're forced to do wrong... and in the wrong spot no less.  It's like blaming Gears of War for killing you super fast if you refuse to take cover. I always stick with my good buddy Justin, game looks like it is not fun, that's not cool.

I love how people harp on a game like Super Street Fighter 4, by most accounts a fantastic game, for not having a thorough enough tutorial, and then jump to defend Nier, by most account a mediocre at best game, for having a tedious, under-explained and pointless mechanic, saying it's the players fault for not understanding how to play the game right.
 
Are all bad games the fault of the player for "not playing it right"? I guess so, because there's always someone who likes a game and for some reason takes it personally when someone they don't even know doesn't like it.

I'm playing  Nier right now and I'm actually really enjoying it. I have to admit, I made the same mistake as Justin and tried fishing in that spot for about 20 minutes before taking a break and running around exploring the town. I just stumbled upon the right spot to fish and thought it was such a shame that the game does such a bad job of showing you where you need to fish.  
it's just a bummer because there's something really cool here, it's just buried underneath tedious missions and confusing side-quests.

Just watched the game trailers review. Not one mention of messed up fishing....

Not that I'm really defending the game, but that just sounds like "I was too hung over to meet the deadlines, fuck it, let's just harp on this bit, and not actually review anything".

By continuing this thread, does this count as beating a dead horse? Destructoid just put out a post about Nier getting DLC and had this to say (emphasis mine):
