    Small Town Americana 0

Night in the Woods is a very specific game for a very specific audience. At first glance, it’s a cutesy adventure game featuring anthropomorphic characters with minor platforming elements. On closer inspection, Night in the Woods is a game that addresses depression, anxiety and the struggles of living in a small town. This indie game manages to punch above its weight and delivers a story with some serious emotional impact. Night in the Woods is far from perfect. The platforming sections ar...

Night in the Woods Review 0

Games such as Gone Home and Kentucky Route Zero are great examples of how creative-types can use games as a unique way to express themselves, and their stories; one which is different from how traditional conventions (such as films or books) likely ever could. Their audiences are no longer confined by the stories told. They can poke, they can prod, and they can discover/interpret the messages these creators have buried in a multitude of different ways. Characters can react differently based on t...

    Dead End Queen 2

I think it’s fair to say that we as a species have a propensity to judge. Be it ourselves, others, or even video games we find it very easy to make snap assessments as to the merits or flaws of this, that and the other. Whilst this trait serves an essential purpose in how we function it is also the source of untold misery and if I’ve learnt one thing from my life it’s the value of giving things the benefit of the doubt sometimes. I have my lapses for sure, more than I’d l...

Night In The Woods Review 0

wakey, wakey...I didn’t expect Night in the Woods to hit me as hard as it did. What on the surface seemed like a simple, charming and beautiful adventure game, turned out to be an extremely emotional journey which resonated with me on an almost too personal level.what differentiates woman-cat and cat-cat? In Night in the Woods, you’ll play as Mae, an anthropomorphic 20 year-old cat who is returning to her small hometown of Possum Springs after dropping out of college. Hoping to fin...

    All is Well 0

There's nothing that mentally ages and separates me out of my generation quite like a piece of media that is fawned over while I think nothing but, "I don't get it." Since the first time I caught wind of Night in the Woods via its successful kickstarter, I stepped backwards into an almost completely unearned petulance, like a child or, more accurately, a cantankerous old man. I like interactive fiction as much as the next person (given the general audience of video games, I probably like it more...

    Night in the Woods 0

Games don't have settings such as this very often - a brick laden rust belt town with weird goth kids, angry neighbors, drifters, hipsters, and working stiffs. Games don't often have characters this well developed and lovable and occasionally hilarious. Games don't often tackle issues like anxiety, depression (both emotional and economical) and are rarely this nuanced with regards to religion. While I think you could trim the story a bit here and there and the gameplay can feel a tad monotonous,...

    Styyyyyyyyle and substance too. 0

Put together with a soft touch that I've rarely found in games. By that I mean, genuinely funny without being slapstick or filled with internet humor, genuinely touching without being preachy or heavy handed, genuinely spooky without jump scares or excessive gore and unpredictable while maintaining direction and a consistent tone. Great art, great dialogue, and even great editing. I feel as though a lot of games with these sorts of David Lynch inspired mysteries only end up dropping the ball the...

Night in the Woods - Introspective (Spoilers) 0

A long form video introspective review that I wrote not too long after the switch release. This is based on the PC Weird Autumn version.Mae arrives at the town’s bus station at night; no parents, compounding perhaps that they don’t care. Did they ever care whilst she was in college? This could be part of why she felt alone or maybe she shut them out and they gave up trying. Either way there was clearly no contact between them on the day she was arriving home so who knows…A nic...
