Here we are folks, depending on your perspective we have arrived at what is either the zenith or the nadir of the video game industry.

The original creators of Night Trap have launched a $330,000 kickstarter to remaster the game and re-release it on modern consoles/PC. They've also said that if the project gets enough attention they'll consider a Night Trap 2(!!) and remasters of other FMV classics, your Sewer Sharks and whatnot.

    Here's the Kickstarter.

Here's a news article on the whole thing by leading FMV expert Justin McElroy.

After looking at the page, it really seems like the people who are behind this are really clueless on why anyone still talks about Night Trap today.

Also, I can not in good faith pay $20 for a copy of Night Trap. Remastered or not.

I can't quite figure out how it would cost so much to make. Just hire some aspiring porn actresses for $10 an hour, give them one take and then bus fare home.

They're not literally remaking it, they're just taking the original video and updating it.

As to why they need that much money? Cant say myself, I'd be interested to hear from someone who would know how expensive a process like this usually is.

So this is like the Criterion Collection version of Night Trap then.

For the zero interest I have in this game ever seeing the light of day again, it IS interesting thing to think about source material for other FMV games that might exist in a format with some actual fidelity, like the original negatives or something. I'd love to see a version of Phantasmagoria with video that's not postage stamp sized and rife with compression artifacts . Maybe that's why Sierra came back :O

Did anyone ever ask for this without even a hint of sarcasm? I mean, good on them for going for it, but what sort of audience would back this?

No thank you. This seems like a couple of people caught sight of some internet people talking about this and thought it would hit big if they did.

If that's not the case, still no thank you!

Didn't the lead developer on Nighttrap die like... earlier this year or last year or something?

Anyway, sure this is a weird thing. I might back it, though. Why not?

    Why? Just why?

Sure it may be a "cult" classic, but it was and forever will be a fucking terrible game, TERRIBLE!!!

Who is the market for this?

It only sold a descent amount of copies because of the controversy it stirred up, i doubt there where many who got the game that actually liked it, is this some kind of videogame hipster thing? "oh look at this shitty and obscure game i'm playing i am a special and unique snowfalke"

I am all for nostalgia and bringing back classic franchises, but this game had no real merit except it's "shock" value and the hype created around it's controversy, it does not deserve to be revived.

Fuck night trap, fuck this kickstarter and fuck the people who thought that this was a good idea.

Reading through Kotaku's article, it kind of looks like their usual click-bait nonsense that they try to pull. I'm already talking with people on the project for the website that I write for to gather information, and the rights to manufacture discs for PS3 and 360 systems is already in the cards, and as usual, the writer doesn't know anything about tech or game development to know what it takes to get games like this working at all. Instead they base it off of no-name developers with no insight on the project whatsoever.

    Bravo Kotaku, keep talking nonsense.

This Kickstarter will never make it. Probably not enough demand for it, but that Kickstarter page didn't help anyone.

I don't even know how to respond to this. This game is a joke, and I can't believe 400 people have backed it so far.

If you're asking who is asking for these kind of games, its pretty much for movie buffs and people who want to own a piece of gaming history. Look at how many times games like Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Mad Dog McCree, and Thayer's Quest have been re-released and the multitude of platforms some of these games got on. Hell, Dragon's Lair got a release on Game Boy Color, Nintendo DS on cart and digitally through DSi Ware and even on Kinect. There's no reason to throw hands up in the air, label people as "Fucking stupid" just because it doesn't fit into what is the "ideal situation".

If I had money to spare, I'd totally throw money to this project. Just because their initial goal is to fulfil backers doesn't mean its the end. If possible they will consider other formats including digital re-releases. Once the Kickstarter goals are met, this doesn't mean its the end of the Night Trap re-release. These people have been trying, for years, to get this project back off the ground. The people with the know how that you're looking for are the people behind the project. Ask them the questions that you want to know. Don't expect places like Kotaku to give you a straight answer, especially for a blogger website that is known to heavily steer their news feed through personal bias and ignorance.

Physical disc stuff aside, you've gotta admit that Kickstarter page is really questionable. This pitch feels half-baked. And their answers to questions about the project haven't been particularly great either.

Maybe the new information you're getting will inspire a lot of confidence, but I would generally show great hesitance in putting any money behind their current pitch.

People have backed a lot of stuff that's dumber than this on Kickstarter. I'm amazed by people's restraint, that it hasn't gotten more money yet.

When I originally saw this, I would have absolutely backed it -- until I realized it was just a re-release of the original from twenty-two years ago. If they were doing a sequel, fine. Hell, even if they were just re-doing the original from scratch, I'd back that. But just remastering original footage and interface? No thanks.
