Night Trap is a controversial horror/adventure game which utilized Full Motion Video. Starred the famous actress Dana Plato. Along with Mortal Kombat, it was referenced in the Congressional hearings which resulted in the creation of the ESRB.

Overview

Night Trap was developed by Digital Pictures. If you played an FMV game on the Sega CD or any platform during the FMV craze, chances are good it was developed by them. The game was originally released for the Sega CD in 1993, but later ported to the Sega 32X, 3DO, PC and Mac. The game is easily the most popular FMV game and is noted for being cheesy and being one of the games that initiated the creation of the ESRB.

Story

A group of teens are having a slumber party at the Martin's house. However strange things have been going on in this house. Five girls who previously stayed at the place had disappeared, so the "Special Control Attack Team" is called upon to protect the new guests and find out what happened. As the new wave of girls arrive to the slumber party, the vampiric Augers begin to invade the house.

Gameplay

Although it merits some consideration for its early foray into the full motion video, interactive movie genre, Night Trap is dreadful in terms of sheer gameplay, which involves monitoring the activity in various rooms of a mansion (by toggling between cameras) and activating traps whenever vampire-like creatures appear. Referred to as "control", the player views events via hidden cameras set up in eight different locations, which can be viewed one at a time.

Controversy

Night Trap is now infamous because of its part in the 1990s Congressional hearings on offensive video game material. Night Trap and Mortal Kombat are cited as primary factors in leading to the development of the ESRB game industry ratings system.  On December 16, 1993, the Sega CD version of Night Trap was removed from store shelves. Due to the game being pulled from shelves prematurely it was not a financial success.

Factoids

One of the actresses in Night Trap was troubled child star Dana Plato who had played Melissa Drummond in the classic 80's show Diff'rent Strokes alongside Gary Coleman.  Plato was more notably known for her robbing of a Video Store and profuse drug habit.  The critical panning of Night Trap did nothing to help her career.  She died of a drug overdose several years later. If there was one good thing to come of the creation of Night Trap it was the theme song, whose complex and meaningful lyrics can be found below.

Of interest to Giant Bomb fans, Night Trap was the subject of the never released episode of "Time Trotters" that was scrapped, despite being near completion, after Jeff's dismissal from Gamespot.  A clip of this episode, including the Night Trap segment, was shown exclusively during the Giant Bomb panel at PAX '09.  It was hilarious.

Night Trap Theme Song

Verse
Love is easy by the light of day.
You get the boys to play away.

Come sundown where darkness falls.
Passion burns and the danger calls.

Some girls go out if you dare.
You better be good, you better beware.

Chorus
Night Trap!
The boys will find you!
Night Trap!
Watch out behind you!
Night Trap!
Losing the time of your life!
You'll be caught in the night!
Night Trap!
