From Software recently posted up a demo of Ninja Blade on the Japanese Xbox Live Marketplace, and it recently went Silver, meaning anyone with a Japanese account can check it out. As that includes us, I downloaded said demo today and gave it a quick run. Here's video of me playing it through, for those of you who can't be bothered to grab it yourself and play:

This is the same demo that was being shown back at the Tokyo Game Show, and at the time I said...
Graphically, the game had the technical chops to make everything look interesting, but a lot of the surfaces looked a little plasticy, too. It'll be interesting to see how much of the game is interactive cutscene and how much is actual ninja business when Ninja Blade releases next year.
I'd like to add to that that the demo is mad boring. Maybe that's because it's stuff I saw months ago, or maybe my position on QTE-based gameplay has become more staunch over the last few months, but... yeah. Not a fan. Perhaps the end product will be a bit more balanced. It's supposed to be coming out in "early 2009." Retail is currently listing it as a March 24 release here in the States.

Looks cool...but I saw the enemy attack twice in about 4 minutes. Not too interesting.

I usually prefer cutting myself. But still awesome.

Hmm, I was somewhat interested in this game. After seeing NINJAS JUMPING FROM HELICOPTERS I was all like "Where do I sign?".

But I made it only a couple of minutes into that video after thinking "hmmm, yeeeeeahhh, I'll just wait for God Of War 3 thanks."

Good looking, not as stylish as say.. Devil May Cry.
Lacking in diverse sound effects and appropreiate music score (too soft, buried by the sounds of 'hack' and 'slash')

Yeah, i know... still a demo, but looks pretty complete to me.

I wonder if Itagaki would have taken his game and put into a futuristic setting at some point. I would have had a lot more faith in that, than this.

What a lame looking QTE text font, it looks 80s neon cheap.

Looks like a knock off  of ninja gaiden that's super easy , it could be interesting, just maybe though.

#10 Posted by pirate_republic (1117 posts) -

ninjas + modern day = fail.
qte + hack and slash = fail.

fail + fail = not interested. although those are some pretty sleek camera effects in them cutscenes.

If last year proved anything, it's that zombies are the new trend.

#12 Posted by Brackynews (4045 posts) -

The rewind to checkpoint is just awful. QTEs would impress me if they actually had 3 or 4 branching results.  Not that you want the game to be super-easy if you get all Perfects, but design 4 different levels of that building, and your result determines which window you crash into.  Just make it DIFFERENT.   Otherwise it's just a damn Laser disc game.  (Protip: always take the upper path.)

idk, hack n slash games bore me to death.

#14 Posted by RenegadeSaint (1523 posts) -

Looks like you're having a bit of trouble there, Jeff.

#15 Posted by ProfessorZombie (84 posts) -

Wow im board. Ive played this.... Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2..... and Devil May Cry.... all of them.... and just about EVERY OTHER japan action game that ever came to America.

#16 Posted by MasterSplinter (636 posts) -

I really want this game to be good... but it won't be.

#17 Edited by TwoOneFive (9459 posts) -

thiiiiiiisssssssss.......

looks like crap.

360 doesn't seem to have a lot going on in 09
#18 Posted by McQuinn (651 posts) -

To many quick time events.  Other than that looks pretty cool.

#19 Posted by pause422 (6172 posts) -

This game looks horrid....I'll just replay NG2 again if I want a ninja game.

#20 Posted by insanejedi (655 posts) -

Looks really boring as you said. You hack and slash dudes and occasionally you have to press a button in these cutscenes.

#21 Edited by YellowChu (15 posts) -

Looks like a  Microsoft Ninja Gaiden, with Force Unleashed quick time events. I hope they polish it up, but they probably won't.

#22 Posted by ImperiousRix (2963 posts) -

Looks like a slow-paced Devil May Cry with a lot of quick-time events.
Probably just a rental for me...

I love the intro video. In a lot of these japanese games and movies people tend to react to things in such a ridiculously over the top way I can't help but laugh. Just watch the dude's reaction after the master hands him the sword. He does a super dramatic full-body turn after saying "I don't understand". I had to laugh.

#24 Posted by PocketfullaButtholes (76 posts) -

Thanks for the tip pirate_republic. I'll be sure to take your anti-ninja advice.

#25 Posted by Progman9000 (258 posts) -

I totally agree with Brackynews.  The first thing I thought when the spider came out and you missed that quicktime thing was, "Oh, dude, I totally hope it grabs him and you have to fight it off to save yourself to keep going!".  But then I realized that would be pretty awesome approach to QTE... and nothing I saw in this game looked awesome or fun to play AT ALL.  It's games like these that make me never want to play games again.

Also... Those first monsters... were protected from falling off the building by an invisible wall.  The least they could have done was allow that to happen.

#26 Posted by MaddProdigy (1041 posts) -

Looked boring, but prolly rent it cause it looks like it might be fun for a day or 2

#27 Posted by Bulldog19892 (1795 posts) -

I'd disagree, it looks exciting to me. It also looks like an exact clone of Ninja Gaiden with a shit load of quicktime event based action. I have no interest whatsoever.

#28 Posted by Hector (3355 posts) -

Looks okay!

#29 Posted by clarke0 (1077 posts) -

Looks like an easy, extremely watered down Ninja Gaiden without half of the coolness. Also it heavily uses QTEs which is one of my most hated over-used game mechanics. In other words, this game looks BAD.

#30 Posted by ghettogabe224 (29 posts) -

This would've been cutting edge a few years ago, but now it's just insanely generic.  It lacks creativity of any kind.  What god of war taught us is that QTE can be fucking awesome, like when through a QET event, you bash a dude's head with a door so hard that it rips off and the door opens the other way.  This QTE is just slash slash slash.  Yawn.

#31 Posted by TeflonBilly (4713 posts) -

Or I could replay DMC4 on Dante Must Die difficulty or maybe get around to play Ninja Gaiden 2.
This looks like weak sauce.

#32 Posted by LiquidPrince (15842 posts) -

Just imagine if this was a Capcom game. Needs more flair really... I mean, Dante would have killed that spider in less then a minute and with style. I liked the wall dive part though.

#33 Posted by ReTarDedFisHy (1062 posts) -

Wowowow, from the comments made here, people really think this isn't a good game.
Not that ReTarDedFisHy is saying otherwise.
There's too many QTEs, and they just repeat. Looks hella repetitive, too.
They need to do a lot of work on this before it'll start turning heads.
ReTarDedFisHy loves them ninjas though... it'd be a surprise if this game turns out to be good.
Maybe ReTarDedFisHy will buy a rental for his friend and check it out when this comes out.

#34 Posted by smokeH (281 posts) -

It looks aliright but looks like its copying Ninja Gaiden too much.

#35 Posted by Det1 (190 posts) -

...well if anything, at least it has ninjas and blades.
More than what I can say about most games.

#36 Posted by Sunjammer (905 posts) -

That ninja is the lamest character ever

#37 Posted by KiddSushi (95 posts) -

A lot of people seem to be down on this game, but it honestly doesn't look that bad to me. Maybe a little generic, but I could some people having fun with it.

#38 Posted by DECA555 (400 posts) -

LOL the 360's God Of War

looks like a crappy DMC / Ninja Gaiden rip off.

#39 Posted by Jaqen_HGhar (864 posts) -

So, it's a boring Ninja Gaiden wannabe? Count me out.

#40 Posted by cikame (969 posts) -

Looks like a fair bit of fun, some of the better qte's i've ever seen, lets you know when its coming but does something cool when you fail :)
Am i one of the only ones who seems to like this, but hates Ninja Gaiden?

One thing they need to do, its something that makes every game better, faster recovery time after being hit, i don't want to watch my dude elaborately stumble for 3 seconds.

#41 Posted by pedantics (62 posts) -

Yeah, "played" through the demo last week (or rather, I suffered through the 10mins of fucking Dragons Lair in a metal S&M suit and about 45 seconds of pretty mindless button mashing combat), and that's enough for me. Will not be picking this up.

#42 Posted by NapalmJello (1 posts) -

Ah, I was hoping for so much more... Looks like it needs to go back in the oven for about 2 years.

#43 Posted by BothBarsOn (100 posts) -

"Only the stealthiest, most highly-skilled ninjas among you can repeatedly mash a button with your thumb."

No thank you.

#44 Posted by jaik (3 posts) -

Looks awesome!

#45 Posted by Iyiu (98 posts) -

looks like a shitty ninja gaiden....

#46 Posted by Meltbrain (2968 posts) -

It doesn't look aggressively awful? But I guess I haven't played it. Totally looks like a Ninja Gaiden/Devil May Cry clone though, so who knows.

#47 Posted by BiggerBomb (6944 posts) -

The game seems a little unpolished and your character doesn't appear to do enough damage. That said, it's an interesting concept that looks like a cross between Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden. I'll keep this game in my peripherals.

#48 Posted by skrutop (3615 posts) -

Yawn.  This game looks straight up dumb.

#49 Posted by CallMeRotten (229 posts) -

I'm gonna have to pass on this one.

#50 Posted by McPaper (254 posts) -

The combat looked boring, the enemies just stood around. Also what's the point of a quick time event which rewinds itself if you fail?

I hope they improve on this.
