Overview
This was one of Shigeru Miyamoto's pet projects at Nintendo. Together with Nintendo EAD Tokyo Group No.1 and indies zero, he developed this special audio guide for the Louvre museum in Paris, France. The original audio guide was available starting April 11, 2012 on location at the Louvre via rentable Nintendo 3DS systems specifically modified for use within the museum. The Louvre was outfitted with GPS-locators that could identify the position of the visitor's 3DS system and thus display contextually relevant information.
On November 27, 2013 Nintendo released an unannounced Nintendo Direct on their European and Japanese Youtube channels with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata and Miyamoto explaining the software on location at the Louvre. The enhanced standalone version of the guide was made available later that day.
The standalone release contains high resolution scans of various paintings and 3D models of sculptures on display at the museum. The software is available in seven languages with the option to purchase each language separately on the 3DS eShop.
A boxed copy of the guide is available exclusively at the Louvre's gift shop.
