I pre-ordered the new zelda 3DS and I need help deciding which games I'm going to get with it. I'm definitely getting pokemon as it was the reason I wanted a 3DS in the first place, but other than that I don't know.

I don't mind getting some remakes as I probably didn't play the original games (this would be my first Zelda game ever, and I haven't played a Mario game since my original game boy). I don't care about the 3D thing at all and I have a hard time taking anime styled games seriously but I can look past it if the game is good enough. I'd love any recommendations you guys can offer, particularly if you can help explain the appeal to someone who's been out of the Nintendo ecosystem for a long time.

I would recommend Super Mario 3D Land above just about anything else. I'm one of the people who have been kinda bored of Mario for the last few years, but 3D land was an absolute joy to play.

Also, Gunman Clive is a decent little platformer on the eShop it has some really good music and it's only like 2$.

@darkshaper: That's the game everyone's been fawning over right? That there is a whole second game after the 8th world or something?

@crithon: Is it difficult to find good games on the eshop? I've basically given up finding fun games on my iphone because the marketplace there is so bad.

Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is probably the best 3DS game out there. Shin Megami Tensei IV, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and Super Mario 3D Land are also very good. So there's no shortage of good games on it.

Fire Emblem is a pretty good game. Etrian Odyssey is actually not that bad if you're into old school RPGs, and drawing your own map is surprisingly a lot of fun. Virtue's Last Reward is good if you can manage to make it to the end without the game file becoming corrupted.

Those are the only three 3DS games I own, the rest are DS games, haha.

A Link Between Worlds is supposed to be pretty good and there is a 3DS XL bundle coming out with it.

I forgot that you could play DS games on a 3DS, that opens up whole new options.

Did I miss the window on Animal Crossing? I feel like it won't be as much fun if there aren't lots of people to talk to about it.

@twigger89: I bought New Leaf in September, a few months after release, and I'm still playing it. Granted, I bought it at the same time as a friend of mine, but I don't think you need to worry about that zeitgeist window to enjoy it. I still street pass many people who play Animal Crossing, you can view their houses and buy items to decorate your own.

Speaking of street passing, you're in for a treat. This brilliant little feature is the reason I bring my 3DS everywhere and the reason I play it more then any other handheld I've ever owned. I also recommend you utilize Club Nintendo.

If you like sports games I love the hell out of Madden NFL for the 3DS. It has a very fun arcadey 5v5 mode that plays exactly like a sports VIDEO game should. Other than that you can never go wrong with Pokemon.
