It’s now common for me to wake up, flip on my 3DS, and view the ridiculous new Swapnote images my friends have scribbled in. I didn’t expect there to be a Swapnote from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime telling me to pay attention to tomorrow.

Nintendo’s been holding pretty regular “Nintendo Direct” events, basically mini press-conferences, since the launch of 3DS. It's where the company has been revealing dates, games and services.

It’s probably not a coincidence the newest “Nintendo Direct” will also be taking place on the same day Sony officially launches the successor to the PSP, Vita. Some consumers already have their machines, having ordered specially priced “early adopter” bundles.

Tomorrow's event takes place at 6:00 a.m. PST / 9:00 a.m. EST at www.nintendo.com/nintendo_direct.

P.S. If you're not using Swapnote, you should. It's really neat!

I'll check it out as a 3DS and Vita owner. It's interesting to hear your newfound enthusiasm for the 3DS, especially for something as trivial as swapnote.

I often hear people say they don't want a Vita because they already have a phone (even some of you folk around the office). It doesn't seem to offer anything worthwhile over the Vita, having both devices now. I would even venture to say the gaming experience on the Vita has been dramatically more fulfilling (but I am invested in the PS3 space as well).

Do you feel the 3DS is more justified as a portable gaming device than the Vita?

They will probably delay MGS 3 some more and maybe push Kid Icarus back even further /sarcasm.

I would like to see a new portable Zelda game! Maybe they could do one that looks like a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. You know, a proper sequel, not that mask-related game nobody liked.

Edit: 3ds came out in Japan Feb 26, maybe announcing something to be released on the one year anniversary?

If they announce a new 3DS with a second analog stick and extra shoulder buttons I'm going to be super pissed. Make the thing cost less, slimmer, better battery etc. but do not add more buttons. The 3DS is perfect as is and the Circle Pad Pro should remain a separate option for those that want it for the mere handful of games.

Wonder what they're counting on to be the "Mario 3D Land" or "Mario Kart 7" of the 3DS this year? Surely, they won't be expecting Luigi's Mansion to shoulder that load, again? Even though I wanna see it - AND the new Paper Mario - they need something else with more..."mass market" appeal. Perhaps, Retro Studios will resurrect the Donkey Kong Land IP like they did DKC, and the 3DS will get a brand new Donkey Kong sidescroller too? That would probably do it; that game did fantastic sales on the Wii...

Coming from someone who works in game localization, that fan translation is straight up commercial quality. Nintendo Legal probably isn't happy about it, but I'd like to see the company distribute it and give the fan team a share, since it's not like they lost any money on it to begin with.

As someone who grew up and argued vehemently on the side of Nintendo in playground debates as a youth, theres always something bitterly depressing about any announcement they make now a days.

What happened? Maybe we were all just more younger and naive.

As uninterested as I am in nintendo hardware, I'd buy a 3DS if they announced a Mother collection.

@SnowyPliskin: I think it is more that a lot of us grew up and our tastes changed, while Nintendo stayed mostly the same. It didn't help either that they continually sink farther into the gimmick philosophy of hardware design.

My friend's uncle also works at Nintendo. What a coincidence! He told us that he has a video tape of Pokemon that never made it into the main games.
