Following a statement made earlier on today, Nintendo Swapnote, the totally sweet feature from the 3DS that lets you send hand dran notes/pictures to people is now being cancelled because of too many people sending dick pics to kids.

Nintendo has learned that some consumers, including minors, have been exchanging their friend codes on Internet bulletin boards and then using Swapnote (known as Nintendo Letter Box in other regions) to exchange offensive material. Nintendo has been investigating ways of preventing this and determined it is best to stop the SpotPass feature of Swapnote because it allows direct exchange of photos and was actively misused.

Nintendo always wants to provide a positive experience for all consumers and limit the risk of any inappropriate activity or misuse of a service. We feel it is important on this occasion to take this action.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience to the many consumers who have been using this service responsibly; however this decision was made considering the point that many minors also use this feature of Swapnote. Thank you for your understanding.

Once again, Nintendo has thrown the baby out with the bathwater. I really liked Swapnote, it let me keep in touch with 3DS friends. But now it's gone forever I guess. Oh well!

So... people are sending dick pics with it? Wouldn't it make more sense to stop the StreetPass feature instead? I thought you can only send notes to friends through SpotPass.

I used it a bunch with my brother, but now he's on a mission for two years...so it's just been a weirdo Nintendo propaganda/marketing conduit.

But yeah this is bullcrap. "Some people send inappropriate private messages to each other that have no effect on others so we blocked it." What the heck is that all about? So what?

For their next system, Nintendo will be distributing Friend Codes that have been encrypted with a 448-bit Blowfish cipher, ensuring no one will be able to communicate with anyone else, ever.

The problem here is tbat Swapnote isn't something that could be easily moderated, unlike something like Miiverse. Nintendo had already planned to make Miiverse available on 3DS, and that would have effectively made Swapnote redundant in some ways, so I'm not broken up over this. I'd be more upset at the people supposedly sending dick pics to children.

Whatever, Swapnote sucks anyway. Takes over an hour just to send crudely drawn dick art to my friends. Get it together NintenSLOW.

I've never received a note over StreetPass. And I guess now I never will. :(

I'm supposed to always be sending one, according to the Letter Box thing, but I'm not sure if it actually works? I don't know, but it would be cool if it did (and if assholes didn't use it to send out crude pictures, leading to the feature being axed).

I feel like "dick pics" is the "this" in "This is why we can't have nice things" pretty often.

So, kids gave their friend codes to strangers on the internet and people are surprised with what they were given? You'd think Nintendo's ingenious system of adding friends as being a big hassle would've solved everything. But how would I know, I have have no friends, hah!.....oh.
