70% sure this is a prototype.
It's not powered by anything! It's not a replacement battery pack (you would see prongs and a bump in the cradle).
It's also not attached to the power adapter slot on the top.
I guess this is probably an early prototype/concept. Unless this thing is powered by... 'streetpass'.

Is that for real?
Man, I put my faith into Nintendo when I plunged for the 3DS, because I have always backed them up on the mobile gaming market. I took my beatings when they line up plummeted and things didn't pour out that had any more fidelity then a Wii game. Then I accepted their lame "sorry" by giving us a couple of shitty NES games no one is going to enjoy for more than 5 minutes, and some decent GBA games that we don't care about in the first place.
I am not sure I can take yet another blow from Nintendo with the lack of care towards their consumers any more. Nintendo use to be visionaries, and now they seem to be idiots being led by a carrot by some evil corporate suit wearer. Until they learn to jump off the treadmill and start to release solid systems with solid gaming lineups, it's over. Give me back my ring Nintendo..*sniffle* Goodbye.
I'm oddly cool with this, especially if it comes with a Monster Hunter game. They look all terrific, but I never played one. Maybe it's my chance to get a 3DS and play a MH game!
... on a second thought, I'll probably wait till they release the "true" hardware revision with the second analog stick incorporated into the 3DS.
Again, I maintain that Nintendo is completely stupid and has absolutely no idea what the hell they're doing. This looks atrocious and makes me not want to buy a 3DS at all.
Oh the young. You've never seen that thing? It was a real original GB upgrade system. I've PLAYED with that thing. (Liked it though. :) )@onan said:

What are you talking about? I was born in '81 - just never had a Gameboy is all, was more of a Game Gear guy myself (yeah I know, how sacrilegious)

A monochrome system that showed GREEN and BLACK and took more batteries than your grandma's vibrator!!!
I refer to my previous comment, the GG both took more batteries AND ate them faster than your granny's vibrator :D
As a rabid Monster Hunter fan, I fucking adore this.
As a practical man, I do not own a 3DS, this is ugly, unwieldy, and silly. I also know that we won't see Monster Hunter 3G 3DS in the US anytime soon, and we're probably not getting NA releases of MHP3rd or MHP3rd HD, either.
That's like one of those bloody awful plastically cheap knock-off accessories I see at the local Poundshop.
I'm seriously thinking about selling my 3DS, just doing absolutely nothing for me.
I love Patrick's writing on this one, you can tell he's utterly confounded by this... thing.
It just seems to be one mess after another with the 3DS. I have a feeling it will go down in history as "the second Virtual Boy". Didn't Nintendo promise not to redesign the console so quickly this time round? In any case this seem like a massive admission on their part that they fucked up designing it the first time round.
The comments in this news article make me sad.
I'll probably get one because it'll be easier to hold and more comfortable.
Its also probably a prototype...I mean the design and production of that add-on cant be more then six months old.
Considering that the DS has always been about touch controls this just seems like a peripheral that isn't really meant to be a core part of the system. Monster Hunter is so big over there that something like this makes sense so when it's taken out of context into the US or Europe where people mostly don't care about Monster Hunter, yes, this probably seems a little crazy.
This will likely see as much use for games outside of Monster Hunter as the peripheral that came with Guitar Hero: On Tour did. It just seems absurd to me that Nintendo would want to fragment their hardware base into people that have an extra analogue stick and those who do not. Either way developers would have to be crazy (or making another Monster Hunter game) to make a DS game with this extra stick as a requirement.
There is a 'rumor' I guess, that says that it isn't Nintendo making this perph. but capcom. So, we'll see...
Am I the only one who thinks it's fake?
And not in a way of "I hope I'm dreaming, this isn't possible". I mean, as much as I don't accept the design from Nintendo I'm not fully against it either. I just think it's faked, I would like to see a confirmation from Famitsu. Specially considering the small, almost unnoticeable part above the right analog slider.
THIS IS MY REACTIONARY COMMENT ABOUT HOW I THINK NINTENDO IS DOOMED DESPITE BARELY KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS OTHER THAN IT EXISTS. BECAUSE GAMER.
@FacestabMan: actually it looks like its being made by Capcom for MH3DS, not Nintendo. But that hasn't been confirmed yet.

HD is confirmed as a launch game for the Vita. Technically not for NA, but they said in the past we would get the game, just not on the PSP, so this makes sense. MH is popular enough over here, just not popular enough to release a new game for what was a dead system.
As for this.. it seems believable and I'm at least relieved that it's apparently Capcom releasing the attachment and not Nintendo saying "yeah, we screwed up with the design, here's a hideous attachment and a new design on the way".
If it turns out to be, then it seems all the hate Nintendo is receiving from this is unwarranted. Now, the hate Capcom would get....@FacestabMan: actually it looks like its being made by Capcom for MH3DS, not Nintendo. But that hasn't been confirmed yet.
