Today In Retail Anarchy: You Can Get a Cheaper 3DS Right Now

How would you like to not only procure yourself a 3DS a few days early, but also get all those free games that are supposed to be a bonus to those impatient sillyheads who willfully became "Nintendo Ambassadors" when they paid too much for the system at launch six months ago? Then get to Walmart, stat.

A Joystiq user has provided visual evidence that Walmart has already gone ahead and made that price drop official, a solid three days ahead of Nintendo's planned August 12 drop. This means that anyone buys today and sets up their eShop connection can get all those free bonus games all immediate like.

Far be it from anyone at Whiskey Media to incite anarchy by actively asserting that people should subvert the rules of order set forth by our retail overlords but...wait, what am I talking about? That's pretty much all we do. If you were planning on getting a cheap 3DS, get your ass to Walmart stat!

Still asking about $168.96 too much as far as I'm concerned.

#5 Posted by Bestostero (2758 posts) -

I wanted to get one, but I decided not to...

#6 Posted by ImmortalSaiyan (4676 posts) -

Still don't want one.

#7 Posted by mithical (307 posts) -

That's a hell of a rollback.

#8 Posted by Pop (2626 posts) -

I wonder if it will sell out or nobody will care xD.

#9 Posted by White_Silhouette (472 posts) -

I would really like a 3DS, but at the same time there is nothing on that system that i want to play.

Man, Wal-Mart. I was feeling less bad about flushing my money down the toilet and getting a 3DS because I'd be getting those sweet free games while people who waited got nothing, now even that small victory has been snatched away. I need to stop buying everything immediately for no reason.

#11 Posted by shadows_kill (3165 posts) -

Its tempting but no.. I think I'm getting a Vita for this gen of handhelds.

#12 Posted by ttocs (763 posts) -

@White_Silhouette: There's definitely not a lot, but Ocarina of Time is amazing. Plus Starfox comes out in exactly one month plus a Shin Megami Tensei game in a couple weeks. There's definitely some good stuff coming out soon.

Maybe if they made a 3DS that only had one color besides "Cosmo Black", maybe it might entice me to get one earlier than I should.

That's why you shouldn't actually announce what the price will drop to, till the day :P

#15 Posted by DrThePunisher (12 posts) -

Instead of WalMart, you could price match at a reputable retailer like Fry's Electronics.

#16 Posted by 49th (2735 posts) -

Thanks for calling me a dunderhead jackass.

#17 Posted by Thor_Molecules (732 posts) -

it has dropped to 169€ at many european retailers as well.
Still not worth it personally, because it hasn't got a single game i want to play, but good for consumers none-the-less!

Retail anarchy perhaps a slightly unfortunate tag, given that England is a mass of looting this week...

#19 Posted by RecSpec (3806 posts) -

I figured something like this would happen eventually.

No big deal though, not like something was taken away from people who bought it early right? RIGHT?

#20 Posted by 014 (351 posts) -

I wanted one until I saw the PS Vita.

#21 Posted by Hizang (8532 posts) -

Who is the bigger company though in Amercia?

#22 Posted by chickdigger802 (501 posts) -

hmmm...

I guess I do have a fair bit of ds games to catch up to if I pick this up...

Still waiting for the inevitable 3DS Lite with better battery life.

Same here. Somebody call me when Fire Emblem gets a 3DS installment that also doesn't come out of Japan.
#25 Posted by Klaimore (947 posts) -

That's right Patrick I'm a "dunderhead" Nintendo ambassador and im proud.

#26 Posted by ADDITIONAL_PYLONS (1 posts) -
@ttocs: Both Ocarina of time and Starfox are great games, however I own both on my N64 and don't offer much incentive to spend that amount of money.
#27 Posted by 49th (2735 posts) -

Thanks for calling me a sillyhead jerk off.

#28 Posted by TooWalrus (13178 posts) -

Like I've said a dozen times now- not until Luigi's Mansion 2- or a hardware refresh.

#29 Posted by MisterMouse (3550 posts) -

WHAT?!!?! that is something I would go for!!!! but I am not sure if I want to put down that money.

#30 Posted by PolyesterPimp (254 posts) -

If only I wanted a 3DS this would be good for me but alas I'm a whore of sony and the vita is more enticing to me.

#31 Posted by C0V3RT (1377 posts) -

Or you could have just gone to Best Buy and then used their price drop guarantee and have them refund you the difference come Friday...whatevs...

#32 Posted by Afroman269 (7387 posts) -

This price drop makes me want to get one but then I stop myself when I remember that I don't care for any of the games that are out for that thing. Even the free games are not enough to persuade me, I'll wait for Luigi's Mansion 2.

#33 Edited by Creamypies (4060 posts) -

Think I'll just walk into the store and take one. Seems to be what everyone else is doing in this country.

#34 Posted by Aus_azn (2224 posts) -

My friend asked me to buy him one while he's on business; I'll be picking mine up after a hardware refresh or another price drop.

#35 Posted by buft (3316 posts) -

As an Ambassador of this price drop i commend anyone who gets the best of both worlds, more power too you.

#36 Posted by TheHBK (5475 posts) -

to me the 3D effect is awesome, especially if it goes into the screen.  Worth 170 bucks?  Well yeah, I think so.  Considering how much a DSi XL was selling for before.  But i just barely have time for console games and I am no longer the kid in the back playing with a gameboy.  for me this is not a good buy.  I would hardly play it.  I loved my DS when I was in college because I could play it between classes or on the subway.  Now, I feel like I am missing out on the handheld goodness.
The biggest factor for me is the cost of games.  40 bucks is way too much for games that don't look better than Dreamcast games.  sure its gameplay and not graphics but lets get real.  Better games are out for 10 bucks on XBLA and on the iPhone.

#37 Posted by Levio (1784 posts) -

The $170 price plus the bonus games is definitely tempting. But still, the thought that this model will probably be obsolete in less than a year is not a very good selling point...

I highly doubt that they will bring out a revision less than a year from now. holiday '12 at the earliest in my book. there are no clear indicators either way so why assume they're gonna bring out a new so soon.

OK....now I'm pissed!! But only because I don't get to exploit this loop hole... kudos to everyone who takes advantage of this opportunity.

As someone who bought the 3DS pretty much on day one... the battery life isn't as bad as everyone made it out to be, seriously.
#40 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19331 posts) -

Still no games I want for the system, so no buy. I don't care about the 20 free games that are given with it.

Nabbed the last one over lunch. Now ready to regret that decision in a few months.
#42 Posted by xombi242 (188 posts) -
@Tally_Pants: The battery life is actually quite decent if the Street Pass is turned off while the system is in standby (closed).
#43 Posted by ThePickle (4168 posts) -

Cheaper 3DS does not mean there are actual games, so no thanks.

#44 Posted by bassman2112 (834 posts) -

I'd get one, honestly I would; but I'm kind of done with handheld gaming...

#45 Edited by NathHaw (2760 posts) -

Heading now. Guy told me they have two left.

Edit: Just got back after buying one. Store had one left. They are selling out quickly it seems.

#46 Posted by RE_Player1 (7558 posts) -

Until there are games I will not buy one. No interest in remakes and old NES games.

#47 Posted by Rirse (262 posts) -

Can confirm it at my Wal-Mart in Indianapolis. Too bad I already bought a used one online (it on the way).

#48 Posted by kollay (1928 posts) -

Vita.

Believe.

#49 Posted by craigbo180 (1739 posts) -

Same thing in the UK, pretty much a few days after the announcement was made the price was dropped to £150.

#50 Posted by Battletoad (130 posts) -

quick, everyone rush to walmart right now so they can have free accss to 10 old untouched roms 3 weeks from now, and 10 more unrevealed old untouched roms at some unspecified date in the future!
