Nintendo 64

Platform »

The successor to the Super Nintendo, the Nintendo 64 was Nintendo's entry in the 32/64 bit war. Although its library would include some of the most beloved games of that era, delays and a lack of third party support caused it to fall behind Sony's Playstation in sales.

I got it the Christmas it came out, when there were only two games. I got Mario 64, and that alone justified the purchase.

I actally didn't own a Nintendo 64 until the last Christmas before it was discontinued, so my first 64 game (that i owned, not the first one i played) was Banjo-Tooie.

My first N64 game was the first proper console game I had. It would be Mario Kart, which I would play a ton of, and then I became quite addicted to Harvest Moon... *sigh* those poor pregnant cows.

Diddy Kong Racing was my first.

My dad being the non-gamer that he is thought that any game with Mario in the title was the same. So when I asked for Super Mario 64 the Christmas that I got my N64, he gave me Mario Golf (my first game, but wasn't bad by any means). He did this again, except with Mario Kart 64 the next year, and then Mario Party the year after that. Eventually I went to a Gamestop to get my own copy of Super Mario 64.

Like many people, Super Mario 64.  Awesome launch game.

My brother didn't get one until a while after, and his first game was Madden.

Mario 64, I got the N64 a few days before it was even released (they started selling them early for some reason).  Man I was so hyped for that I went insane.  I anticipated the thing for months.

I've never owned a Nintendo 64, but someone gave me a copy of Ocarina of Time...so I have that game. :P

No, I believe them, there's a lot of kids & people that didn't have the money to get it on day one.  I'm just surprised there aren't more hardcore gamers like me (and maybe you?) here...

Lot of DK 64 on here...

...hated that game.  Perfect Dark too.  Actually, I hated any game that took that stupid fucking booster pack scam shit.  Except Rogue Squadron.  That was amazing!

Star Wars Episode I: Racer was fucking amazing.  I'm glad someone else at least acknowledges this game's existence.

For me, it was Starfox 64.  Still one of my favorite N64 titles.

Mari 64,  I regret selling this system... infact should have kept my Sega Genesis too.. damn it.

#46 Posted by Randolph (374 posts) - 4 years, 7 months ago

I think the first game I played on it was Mario 64, the first game I owned on it was StarFox 64, and my favorite games on it were Duke Nukem 64, Doom 64, and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.  Great system.

#47 Posted by spiceninja (2985 posts) - 4 years, 7 months ago

The first game I owned for it was Rayman 2. I debated on either getting it or Earthworm Jim 3D. Thankfully I got Rayman 2.

I might be alone on this one. I got Cruis'n USA as my first N64 game. I believe I wanted to get Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, but it was sold out everywhere, so I got Cruis'n instead. I recall Super Mario 64 was the first game I rented on my N64, and my best friends thought I was nuts because Mortal Kombat Trilogy had just come out and we were all huge MK fans. I think I made the right choice there by going with Mario. Really... MKT in general wasn't so hot, especially not so much on the N64. As for Cruisin', well... looking back, it's not a great game, but I had some good times with it. Heh, and in the end, I'm not the biggest fan of Super Mario 64. I can appreciate it's significance in paving the way for 3D games to follow, but for the most part, I don't think it's nearly as great as most people would have you believe. I actually feel similarly about Mario Galaxy, which I think was quite a major disappointment, and unlike Super Mario 64, I can't really say it did much for the greater good of games.

Also, I'd just like to add that I think the N64 doesn't get nearly the recognition it deserves. Most people will claim the PS1 was superior, but looking back, I think N64 definitely had the better games. Sure, it had some major dry spells, which have plagued Nintendo sense, but the quality was top-notch with most of those big games. Ultimately, I think we can all agree that what's more important is quality over quantity.
