Atlus Confirm Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

#1 Posted by Linkyshinks (9881 posts) -

Atlus has confirmed that the fifth mainline Shin Megami Tensei RPG is coming to Nintendo DS. The last main entry in the popular series came almost five years ago in the form of SMT: Maniax

A strange dimension has opened in the South Pole, with the space being called the "Schwarz Birth" and it starting to expand and consume the world, leading to mass panic!.

Players take on the role of a Japanese member of specialist team (consisting of Gore, plus a US soldier called Himenes and a Russian scientist by the name of Zelenin) put together by the United Nations in order to tackle the unusual happening.

Characters wear some Sci-Fi outfits called Demonica Suits (DEMOuntable Next Integrated Capability Armour) that can be upgraded further into the adventure using applications and they all travel around in a strong vehicle that can also fly - the Red Sprite (players will meet up with The Blue Jet, The Alps and The Gigantic along the way).

The top half of the DS will show the 3D First Person viewpoint, whilst the lower touch-screen has a map and support information (with four options: Mission Log, Demonica, Analyse, Icon Help). There are to be more than 300 demons included in Strange Journey, which is a massive 120 more than in SMT: Nocturne on the PS2.

In addition, there is a negotiation technique in place, and a system that appears to be like Press Turn but is in fact slightly different and called 'Devil Co-op' where players that hit a weak point on an enemy during battles (with teams of up to four) can then join forces with demons to set off a devastating combination move. During missions, the team will be able to search around the world to find rare items to use with customising their kit.

This new project has a very strong development team working on it. The Producer is Kazuma Kaneko (who is also working on the Original Concept, as well as the Character and Devil Design), the Director is Eiji Ishida (who worked as Chief Designer for SMT3/Raidou/Raidou2), the game's scenario is being penned by Shogo Isogai (of SMT2/SMTif/Devil Summoner/Soul Hackers/SMT3/Raidou/Trauma series fame), whilst the Shoji Meguro is working on composing the sound.

Oh, wow sounds sweet! It's hard to keep up with all the different SMT storylines and spin-offs but I can understand this one. I will look out for this one.

I keep thinking they might be inspired by Dead Space or something. Just like the FFXIII people said they were being inspired by COD.

I still need to get Survivor, but there's still no release date for Europe!. It's gameplay style sounds like something I would really like.

First Person Dungeon Crawler with random battles? I might have to pass this up. I'm really enjoying SMT: Devil Survivor right now and would prefer that type of gameplay.

Cool. I'm still busy with Devil Survivor though.

The Schwarz birth, huh?  So... will I be able to pit Lone Star versus Rick Moranis?  Please?  Maybe a little cameo by Pizza the Hutt?

Oh come on.  You know that was coming.  Anyways, game looks good.

  •  A spatial rift appeared over Antarctica, threatening the seven billion humans who live on planet Earth. Humans call the place it leads to “Schwarz-verse,” and exploring this mysterious dimension is your goal as the protagonist in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.
  • As a member of the exploration team sent in order to find a way to counter this unknown factor, you discover that the other world was much harsher than you could have imagined, with demons that only appear in legends and myths appearing before you.
  • “You” are the nameless protagonist, a Japanese elite soldier who has received harsh training and discipline. Under the orders of the country, you join the exploration team on the ship Red Sprite No. 1. This amphibious ship serves as a base in the unknown world, being the only place you can consider safe. Aside from the Red Sprite No. 1 that the protagonist rides, there also exist other ships, named the Blue Jet No. 2, Elves No. 3, and Gigantic No. 4.
  • Your crew is a hodgepodge gathering of elite scientists and soldiers from all over the world. The men on No. 1 are the commanding crew, while those on No. 2 and 4 specialize in battle, and the people on No. 3 are scientists. Here is a quick glimpse at some of your crew members:
  • Captain Gore – The Captain of the Schwartz-verse exploration team. On account of his exceptional skills and leadership abilities, he was appointed to be the leader of the team that determines the fate of mankind. “So long as all in this ship cooperate, investigation is not an impossibility.”
  • Himenez – An American who has had experience in campaigns. He’s worked his way up from the bottom and, looking forward to the rewards after this is all done and over with, he volunteered for the team. “As long as I get what I deserve, I plan on contributing what I can as long as I’m not dead.”
  • Selenin – A Russian scientist, she was recruited based on her knowledge related to the Schwarz-verse. “The populace is being deceived with the false information that there is a large blizzard storm, but the truth is…”
  • The game is laid out in sprawling 3-D dungeons. The top screen shows the world as you see it, in first person. With upgrades that you can pick up through the game, you may be able to discover things you couldn’t see before. The bottom screen reflects the screen on the arm-piece of the Demonica Suit you wear, which displays vital information. Thus far, the only confirmed function is a map, but almost certainly there are several other support options available such as mission log, analyze, and videmonica.
  • In order for humans to stand a chance against the danger of this new world, they wear the Demonica Suit, state-of-the-art armor pieced together by scientists. Not only does it have the ability to adjust to the environment, but in anticipation of encounters with unknown life forms, it also improves battle capabilities. Various applications are included in the suit, such as the ability to search for enemies that won’t appear at first sight or to confirm unknown life forms, as well as a system for the suit to improve itself. There are other mysteries surrounding this armor and you’ll discover more about them as you customize the suit to your liking.
  • Essential to the series are the demons, and there are plenty of them in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. In fact, there are more in here than in any other series in the SMTSMT series since the very first game, returned to create new monsters for Strange Journey. Morax, a humanoid with a bison head (one of the many demons in the Key of Solomon), and the demonic-looking Bugaboo are two examples. main series, numbering at 300. Kaneko Kazuma, the artist behind the
  • And of course, all of these monsters can be recruited and used to fuse new ones. This is done through conversation. Each demon has their own personality and the correct choices must be chosen in order to convince them to join you. However, sometimes, instead of joining, a monster will just give you an item or heal you instead.
  • These demons can be used in battle, taking advantage of enemy’s weaknesses or performing combos with fellow teammate demons. Various monsters will also give you quests out of boredom, allowing you to find rare items. Just like core SMT games monsters can also be fused, combining their abilities and gaining even stronger ones.
  • Also of note is the importance of your relation to your crew members. No matter how many demons you collect, you cannot complete your missions without the cooperation of your crew members. With their help you can create new items. Based on your answers in crew conversations, the story may move towards a happier future for mankind or an apocalypse. You decide.

I only just started getting into the Persona series. This is some SMT over load for me.

I want to believe there's some internal niche division going on in Atlus. It seems like Shoji Meguro is the only guy involved with everything that is SMT, while Kazuma Kaneko goes about doing some more grimmer stuff like Strange Journey, while other dudes work on Persona stuff.

And so like Kaneko's crew is all leather jackets and greased hair while the Persona staff is all like collar shirts and retarded v-necks. They hate the living shit out of each other, because Kaneko doesn't like how Persona's become the most popular SMT branch, while the Persona staff hates the shit out of Kaneko's leather crew becauese they think Kaneko's a senile, geriatric bastard and also thinks first-person dungeon crawling is out of style. This creates internal competition to make the best SMT game ever, which means Atlus USA has to translate 20 SMT games per day. Yeah.

Hating the living shit out of each other is a wild exaggeration.

I doubt there is any hate, at all, each  SMT does it's own thing and has it's own direction which caters to it's audience.

...Why? I could maybe understand wanting a PS3 entry if you were big on graphics, but...

I was kind of worried about this until I saw the little Jack Frost icon in the thrd video. All is better now.

And theres a reason why they wont be just as great on the DS? I guess im just not following your logic.

Mmmm....I was kinda hoping that it was going to be on the PS2.......Oh well. If it's good than I don't care. We've been having a lot of hand-held SMT games lately. (the re-make of the first persona, devil survivor, and now strange journey)

Oh and I remember those stupid goat things (the middle one in the third vid) from Digital Devil Saga. They were a pain in the ass the first time I saw them.

That's purely subjective.  A kickass game is a kickass game regardless of what it's released on.
