Finally got a DS, tell me what games to buy!

I just got a DS Lite from a friend who never used it, and while I'm obviously excited to finally have access to its huge catalog, I'm also a bit overwhelmed.  So tell me, GB community, what games should I buy?!

Professor Layton(s) should be the first thing you get :)

Phoenix Wright 1 - 3 and Apollo Justice.

Dragon Quest and Golden Sun Dark Dawn if you like RPGs.
The pokemon games are also a good option for RPGs.
Ghost Trick if you like puzzle games. Has an excellent story.
Also Picross 3D for puzzle games.
Ninjatown if you like tower defence.

Buy this  http://www.gamestop.com/ds/games/nine-hours-nine-persons-nine-doors/78463 if you like adventure games. Buy pokemon if you like RPGs or if you want to make lots of 12-year-old friends. Buy Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow if you like Castlevania games. Zelda Spirit Tracks is good. The World Ends With You is a really unique and kinda frustrating but ultimately rewarding RPG from Square. Picross 3D is great if you like doing Sudoku or other math-oriented puzzles. Brain Age sucks.

If you're looking for ideas, just google "best DS games" and look at people's top 10 lists and stuff, that should get you started on the obvious stuff.

Picross 3D
Dragon Quest IX
Bowser's Story
Henry Hatsworth
Phantom Hour Glass

Those are just a few I can think of at the moment.

If you want some really awesome hidden gems though, listen to the NintenDownload X-press and own games from cool indie developers like Genterprise, Lemon Games and more! Become the proud owner of the MyNotebook series (collect them all!) or the My Farm series from BIP Media!

I feel oppressed by the weight of too many good DS games over the past 7 years  to tell you about all of them, so I'm just going to run away.

From the must haves to can haves:
1.Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, PW AA:Justice for all, PW AA: Trials and Tribulations - one of the best stories I've ever seen in a video game. All 3 titles are a total must have. There's also a sequel called Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney but I find it much less interesting and skippable. There's also a spinoff called Ace Attorney investigations featuring one of the series' main characters; the story is great as usual but I find the gameplay a bit more boring.
2.Professor Layton and the Curious Village, PL and the Diabolical Box, PL and the Unwound Future - along with PW, Layton has one of the best stories and plot twists I've ever seen. The gameplay is addictive as hell.
3.Elite Beat Agents - the best usage of the DS' touch screen I've ever seen in a video game.
4.Advance Wars: Dual Strike - an amazing turn based strategy title, even better with a friend. WARNING: The sequel is much, much worse (seriously, not kidding here) but if you liked the first one I supposed it could be worth a shot.
5.Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - an extremely original title with excellent plot.
6.Pokemon Black/White - it's Pokemon. 'Nuff said.
7.Picross, Picross 3D - one of the most addictive puzzle games I've ever played
8.Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars - a very good action game.

The DS is the platform with the best story driven games in my opinion. Seriously, Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright are both so fucking amazing.

AND THERE'S GONNA BE A GAME FEATURING THEM BOTH!!!

If you like point and click adventure games then you have to get Hotel Dusk. There's a sequel to it to but I cannot think of the name of it... it was only released in Europe and Japan.

Ghost Trick is a really cool game.

Final Fantasy IV, (closest thing to a modern remake of the game)

I really enjoyed Hotel Dusk too, don't know what the general perception of that game is, but i would personally recommend it. Also Ninja Gaiden.

I think the public opinion of that game is that Hotel Dusk was pretty good.

Every important game mentioned in the first 4 responses, nice.  But let's not forget the Miles Edgeworth game.

Good to know. I don't know why but in my head i always thought it was a over looked gem. Or that people just hated it cause it tried something different.

Only one other person said 999 so I'll say it too.

And Devil Survivor is excellent too. Other games I suggest:

  • The World Ends With You
  • Ghost Trick
  • Rhythm Heaven
  • All of the Ace Attorney games (+Ace Investigations) in the order that they released in
