Good games to start out with?

#1 Posted by Yoda (55 posts) -

Hey guys im thinking about picking up a DS , and was wondering what would be some good games to get with it..

I already know i would get New Super mario Bros.

If i could get 2 more what would you suggest (i dont like turn based strategy or FF games)

Personally I'd go for Mario Kart DS and Elite Beat Agents. The former has tons of replay value and is just plain fun and the latter is really original, addictive and certainly one of the greatest rhythm games I've played.

I also agree with Mario Kart DS.  I also suggest any Castlevania DS game.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl is fun if you like the series.

Despite the fact it wasn't very critically well received, I'd have to say Sim City DS. Maybe Age of Empires DS.

Cooking Mama is surprisingly fun.......seriously also Trauma Center: Under The Knife - Mario Kart DS is a little too repetitive for my tastes but i would suggest one of the ones i just mentioned and Mario Kart DS

I'd give another vote to Mario Kart DS, I found that it had great longevity. Both the single player and multiplayer are great fun too! Zelda: Phantom Hour class would be a good choice too.

I always say Mario Kart and Metroid Prime Hunters.

#9 Posted by Yoda (55 posts) -

ok so..

Mario Kart DS,  New Super Mario Bros.

Other didnt really interest me.. How is "the world ends with you" ?? or anything that uses the stylus in a great way?

#10 Posted by ChaosTony (102 posts) -

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is pretty awesome.

#11 Posted by Wolverine (4276 posts) -

Ninja Gaiden is supposed to use the stylus well.

#12 Posted by suitteeth (50 posts) -

#13 Posted by suitteeth (50 posts) -

World Ends With You is a great game (it's actually my favourite on the system). It's got a lot of customization, so the unique battle system shouldn't ever baffle you, but there is a lot of dialogue throughout the game.

The story seems to be kinda hit and miss with some people, but I enjoyed it.

Other gmaes that you could try that use the stylus a lot are TLoZ-Phantom Hourglass. It's just a continuation of the standard top-down Zelda formula, but a little bit easier and with stylus controls.

If you're a action gamer, I recommend these games:

Castlevnia: Dawn Of Sorrow (sequel to Aria of Sorrow, it's the better DS Metroidvania game between it and Portrait Of Ruin, namely due to the soul system-it's like a demonic Pokemon, almost)

Contra 4 (pretty self-explanatory. Great bosses, crazy levels, and brutal difficulty).

Elite Beat Agents and Contra 4.

Any of the Castlevania games if you can find them.  Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright are two good series as well.

Oh god.

Anyway, Contra 4 kicks ass.  There's a new Fire Emblem soon if you're into that.

Professor Layton is awesome.
I've had Mario Kart since it came out and I still play it.
Playing through Zelda at the mo, its pretty much exactly the same as all the other Zelda games i've played except with stylus controls.
If you're looking for something out of left field, Trace Memory is a great choice
Advance Wars Dual Strike is amazing aswell, better than Days of Ruin IMHO.
I'm playing Speed Racer aswell at the moment, its the only racing game other than Mario Kart that i've played on the ds that is any good, kind of like F-Zero.  (When are nintendo gonna make F-Zero DS?!)

awesome. If you're big on stylus usage get Phantom Hourglass.
Or just wait for Chrono Trigger

I would get Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and Elite Beat Agents...those are both great games and relatively cheap now. And if you like puzzle games...Professor Layton is an excellent game.

This!

Also:

- Meteos (action puzzle)
- GRiD (racing)
- Hotel Dusk (adventure)

And of course, the ever overlooked jewel, one of the few RTS that actually work, and a fantastic game overall, Anno 1701 DS. If you can find it.

#37 Posted by theshadow027 (150 posts) -

Castlevania (Preferably Dawn Of Sorrow)

and Mario Kart or Pokemon

Advance Wars Dual Strike is my favorite DS game.

#40 Posted by OfficialJab (151 posts) -

Meteos, if you can find it.

atv quad frenzy.

#42 Posted by Cousken (30 posts) -

I can wholeheartedly recomend 'The World Ends With You', even if you utterly hate Final Fantasy  (same developer). The game is way different from FF; it's full  real time and has the most original use of the touch screen and dual screen that i have seen so far.

I liked Hotel Dusk as well, but that's probably coz i'm a very old gamer and i miss old style adventure games... But the story there is pretty nice. Or should i say nice enough.

Only 1 and 2? What was wrong with the third one? That was my favorite of the bunch!

My first DS game was Meteos. I still have that game, and I do play it once in a while.

#47 Posted by CoolDrMoney (1978 posts) -

Meteos or Professor Layton
