    I ask because Square Enix is not changing the multiplayer to accommodate  western style play.  Over internet, not local gatherings.

    So you are wondering how to play against people in the area that you haven't met? Or people that you do know who aren't in the area?

    Sounds to me like he's asking how to trick a local wireless multiplayer function into working over the internet, similar to XBConnect.
