Is this weird - Japanese celebrating DS character's birthday?

Do You Know Whose Birthday It Was Yesterday?  (source)

In the west we are not familiar with Love Plus unless we read about it.  It is a Japan only series and zero chance of being localised.  More than that, no distributor would be brave enough to release it.  You see, it is a dating sim with touching.  That's right, you have to touch your teenage school girl to work the game.  I feel dirty just thinking about playing the game.

Moving on, it was one of the characters birthday recently (I don't get that, but hey, even game characters are born right?)  It is Komaki Manaka:

Exactly  how popular this in Japan is signified by what some "fans" did to celebrate her birthday - getting her cakes - I kid you not.

Why can't Japanese people just get a blow up doll like a normal person  ^-^

Would you be tempted to buy this game if it was in English?
Do you celebrate game character birthdays or are you normal?

Cultural differences aside, this is just mega weird to me.

Eh, it's normal for them, right? More power to them I guess. I wouldn't have any interest in a game like this though.

I read the title, "Is this weird, Japanese ..."

I stopped there. Once you said Japanese, it needs no further explanation.

Well, there are plenty of nutjobs in the west as well.  Some of them gamers as well I figure.

Japanese love their virtual girls.  I've seen lots of pictures of a girl on a monitor and a cake in front of it.

It's not just being perverted weirdos, it's also humor to them, making fun of weirdos.

It's weird alright but since they're Japanese I'll let them have this one. It's very nice of them to do so though. As weird as I may sound, I really want to try this game out just to see how it works.

There is a part of me that wants to try it as well.  We'll call it a cultural  **cough** experience.  I think the game is text heavy though making it improbable that I will.

    @oldschool: I don't think I'll ever get the chance to, not that I'm worried that I won't.

I am not going to argue other than to say that cultural differences  are what makes things seem weird.  Some of it is a hell of a lot of fun though - I go to anime conventions with people who just love the dress-up (and they are great people having fun).

Completely true, they can be very damn funny, I'm just saying that if you think shit happens in the US, then there's some blue shit happening in that country man....

We seem to get a "yeah, that's Japan"sentiment, but is that a bad thing?  Are people ragging on Japan or just seeing what they expect and it isn't a bad thing?

Well we are talking about a japanese game where " you have to touch your teenage school girl to work the game.". So...no it's not weird or at the very least not surprising.
