    Following on from Agent J's thread on whether a sports game can work on the DS, here are the best sport games released (according to Metacritic).  So, which is the best?  Which ones do you actually have?

    For me, I do have SBK (okay, nothing special), Tony Hawk's Proving Ground (don't play it, but my children didn't mind it) and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08.  Tiger Woods is my choice.  I don't care for golf as such, but it was cheap and reviewed well.  I was pleasantly surprised, it is really good.

    Nintendo really need to get Mario off his fat plumber's arse and get into some decent sports.  Mario Golf, Mario Tennis & Mario Baseball would be perfect for the DS and I would certainly buy them (Golf & Tennis were excellent on the GBA).

    Scrap Shaune White and Skate it from that list, the Tony Hawk games are extremely good (voted the wrong game by accident...)

    Lots of Japanese text = not good :-(

    If I took off the ordinary games, there would be hardly any choices :P  You have to be honest and say that it isn't a great list, hell, it's barely okay.  You have to give it to the PSP in this genre (I have a couple but don't play them either).  Thing is, there is no reason a really good game based on sport can't be made for the DS, it is just the developers have no real incentive to try something really different.  Tell me that a really good SSX couldn't be made, using the right camera angle and cel shading characters (maybe Nintendo could do a 1080?).

    Eyeshield is a Japanese game based on an anime based on a manga about American Football. I dont know about the DS version, but the Wii game is supposed to be very good. You are right about the PSP dominating handheld sports games. (BTW Cel shading is actually a really hard process, so it'd probably be better not to make the DS chug something like that out.)

    Cel shading can be achieved in many different ways, I'm sure by now they can optimise it so heavily it gives a nearly insignificant performance hit. Ie, lacking cel shading in TP didn't enable them to create visuals that much better than WW, even though they didn't have this "hard process" on top. It's probably not very possible on the DS though. He probably just meant go for a cartoony look, people (falsely) call that cel shading anyway.

    And like I said in the other thread:
    You don't need power, you just need decent developers. Why isn't there any Sensible Soccer on DS for example? What about a RTS-like soccer or Madden or Hockey game which lets you direct your whole team with the stylus and perform certain actions? What about coaching, using the touch screen just like you see the coaches use the chalk boards to device plans in those silly sport movies. The potential is so there.

    Out of those, Tony Hawk's Sk8land.

    The Fifa games are really good on the DS though.

    SEGA Superstars Tennis does a good job of getting the Virtua Tennis engine running on the DS.

    I think that the FIFA 09 was the highest rated sport game, so they must have done a reasonable job with it.  I wold rather a Mario Strikers Football game made for the DS.  That arcade style sport game is the only style I can play.

    I deliberately stopped with the FIFA football game because it was the highest rated one.
