I thought that after a long love affair with my GBA, that no other handheld console would top it.

Then came the DS.  And it didn't top it - at first.

But by year 3 of the life of the DS and certainly after the DS Lite, it came into a massive rise with the most phenomonal RPG games ever.  I am now at 96 games and only 14 short of my GBA library and I didn't see that coming.  It is the best console by a long margin for me now.

What about yourselves?

I love the DS, if they addressed a few specific things I think it'd be the best ever by a long shot.

I was at about 25 GBA games when my carry-on bag got stolen at the LA airport. DAMN YOU CALIFORNIA!! Right now I've got six DS games, which is fine, because I don't travel much, and don't play it much at home. Still, I play it way more than my OTHER hand held consoles...

25 games - oh the horror  :-(  I would have turned into the Incredible Hulk if that happened to me.  I don't repress  :-)

When I go away with work, I carry my game stuff in my backpack, and never put it down.  Sometimes I have as much as a couple of thoudand dollars worth of stuff in it.

Yeah, I had just picked up my checked suitcase, and I set my carry-on on top of it. I turned dropped my passport, and turned around to get it, accidentally knocking my suitcase to the floor, with the carry-on on top of it. When I went to pick the suitcase up, someone had run off with the carry-on bag.

my Ds lite has been broken for some time now... and it hit me. The DS lite is one of the few purchases where I didnt lose any interest after having it for a significant amount of time. I still love it as much as I did  the day I bought it.

The only other item like that for me is my Car, my baby :(

on and @oldschool, for instance they could take advantage of the DSiware. It's been a while since I had some time with my DS so i cant really say off the top of my head.

I dunno man... I really like my GBA. Together with the PS2 it was the platform responsible for getting me into RPGs (before that I had only played EarthBound -- which I did not like, Pokemon Silver, Lufia II and Alundra II).

I guess I'd call it about equal to the GBA, but I'm not ready yet to call it better.

My GBA got me into RPG as well - Breath of Fire & Golden Sun comes to mind.  I never even remember playing an RPG before that.  The few on the Gamecube cemented that - Tales of Symhonia, Final Fatasy Crystal Chronicles & Baten Kaitos.

The DS just made it my gere of choice and I have collected a good back catalogue of PS2 RPG as a consequence.  Thank you GBA, but like a man in mid-life crisis, I have dumped the first love of my life and gone with something younger and more flexible  :-)

The DS is a fine portable system, but it isn't anywhere near as good as the GBA was. I loved TWEWY, but while the DS mostly tries to make mini-game collections, Personal Trainers and wonky N64 games with a d-pad, the GBA (and the GB) were basically SNESes and NESes in your pocket, but with modern gaming conventions attached. The only games I ever find myself liking on the DS are ones that could've obviously been done on the GBA.
Sure, the DS is a good portable system. There just isn't a chance in hell that it is better than the GBA or GBC.

I see it is an upgraded SNES.  It does all what the SNES did, but better.  All the gamez that end in Z and the like are irrelevant as even if you remove them, the library is still huge.

DS is the best current portable system, and a pretty good system, but I get nowhere near the enjoyment out of it I got from the original Gameboy.

No it isn't. Firstly, the GBA was an upgraded SNES. Secondly, the vast majority of good DS games are either ports, remakes, or games that were on the GBA in Japan. I can't name five great games that don't fit that criteria.

That sounds like a challenge.

I'll get back to you if I can prove you wrong  :-)

I have never played any of my handhelds as much as I play my PSP. But not even I am silly enough to suggest that the battle of best handheld would be between anything other then GBA and DS.

Hells yes. I have had every handheld (except a Nomad) at one point, and I would say so. I could not choose any other through nostalgia. Close second would be a GBA and third would be the PC Engine GT.

This comes a little too close to your accusations of Brad and Giant Bomb's anti-Nintendo bias for comfort, but I agree it's a pretty good handheld.

I am incredibly unhappy with my DS.  I loved playing it when I got it at launch date and played Super Mario 64 DS for hella many hours, but they lacked any interesting games to play over and over, let alone once.
I have to say that I took my GBA for granted.  It was an incredible handheld.  The DS has some Mario games, Animal Crossing (which I regret purchasing, because the replay value ends too quickly), and uh, Mario Kart.  Yup.

I still have a place in my heart for the GBC. Now if you could directly plug in your old GBC games right into the DS it would be the best. It's a tough choice - I'd go with "about equal to"

in terms of game lineup, there should be no question that the DS is the king. Compare the top 20 DS games with the top 20 of any other handheld and I can guarantee the quality won't even be close. There are of course other factors, but in my eyes a game lineup makes a console

I am not pretending to be a journalist though.  You may want to check out my thread where I criticised the DS and asked what others had dilikes about it.

I call them as I see them.  Whilst the DS has become my favourite console of all time, it still could take lessons from elsewhere, including the PSP, to make it better.

It's really close between the DS and the GBA.

I like the GBA more. To many games try things that just don't work, mic stuff, dual screen stuff, touch screen stuff. When it's done good it's good but there are few games that actually use them good. Traditional style games with traditional gameplay don't need touch screen and all that other stuff.

It is true that lazy developers have screwed up some games that should have been more.  Even Nintendo - The first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon one, the GBA and DS were the same game really, and the touch extras were largely pointless.

There are too many great games that make up for the bad ones (not unlike the PS2).

Stop being a politician and get off the fence  :-)

when it comes to Nintendo, they have made great consoles.  Other handheld systems have been good as well, but the mistakes killed them all, or in the case of the PSP, it has sold a lot of hardware and not a lot of software as it isn't a particularly good system (and the piracy) for gaming.
