Nintendo promised a "quality of life" initiative would be a new area of interest for the company, and we now know about its first project: a device monitoring your sleep.

    No Caption Provided

You don't have to wear Nintendo's device, however, separating it from the "wearable" category that's become increasingly popular in technology lately. Instead, the monitor hangs out on a bedside table.

Nintendo is developing the device in conjunction with ResMed Inc, a company known for treating sleep disorders.

The device will, in theory, seamlessly upload data to the cloud, and provide users information on the quality of the previous night's sleep and fatigue levels. Nintendo has not outlined how the software-side will work just yet.

It's possible a subscription will be sold alongside the device, but details on pricing and release date are coming later. Nintendo only promised the device would show up by March 2016. That's a ways away.

Is this the kind of direction they were planning on heading with the Vitality Sensor? And then it morphed into this, maybe?

I think it's cool that Nintendo wants to expand their business. I'd like to sugar coat it by thinking that Nintendo wants our lives in general to be better, 'cause that seems like a Nintendo thing to do.

The company they're working with made this sleep monitor:

    No Caption Provided

Assuming they put put something like this with Nintendo, it could be interesting if they tie it into an app or even "game" comparable to Wii Fit. Not having to do anything is one benefit, but these non-contact monitors are actually more precise because they can measure their surroundings well. It's definitely weird, but Wii Fit was weird as well and it turned out to be a hit. It's smart of them to take a different approach and not make a smartband or smartwatch like Microsoft, Google or Apple. That would've been suicide.

I'm not sure what's creepy about it, unless you think that Nintendo is using this to predict your sleep patterns and send crooks to steal your valuables in the night.

Even with that possibility (inevitability?), I still think this is a cool idea.

Don't you people see what Nintendo is trying to do? They want to subliminally put Nintendo products into your dreams so you want to buy more Nintendo products. It's how they plan to sell more WiiUs. Think about it with an open mind and you will see I am right.

Can anyone enlighten me how a device that sits beside my bed might record any meaningful information on the quality of my sleep? I don't even see how it would detect that I'm asleep in the first place with a useful level of accuracy.

I have about as much faith in this as I have in a nintendo ds game telling me how intelligent someone is.

If it's proper biomedical tech that works and is based on real science then awesome.

I don't know about other hospitals, but I know that if you do a sleep study through Kaiser, they send you home with a digital video camera to record you while you sleep. Then you take it back to them and a doctor (or someone) looks at it and analyzes it. AFAIK, this is the typical method of analyzing sleep problems.

I have no idea what's happening on the backend of that exchange, but I can't believe that a human being is actually watching hours upon hours of people sleeping. My guess is that they use software to do some analysis in broad strokes and flag potential problems that a doctor then reviews. Maybe that's what Nintendo is doing here.

In the year 2020, Nintendo releases the ultimate virtual reality console. Imagine a device that broadcasts games into your brain while you sleep, turning your dreams into virtual worlds of adventure.

    It's called... The Dreamcast.

Hey guys, people other than your healthcare provider having information about your health is a DANGEROUS and very slippery slope. Young people, please consider the reasons we have HIPAA http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/

@confideration: It's not a slippery slope. And HIPPA is more about your doctor and insurance and employer. It doesn't really apply to say a health app you use to track your weight. Obviously, Nintendo shouldn't share this sleep health information with a third party. But I think Nintendo has been trustworthy in the past with the Wii Fit. Since wii fit hasn't led to scandal(it tracks your weight) I don't see this as alarming at all. I think its cool and interesting and a great way for Nintendo to differentiate itself from the competition which is all focused on graphics. I want to track my sleep health as sometimes I don't sleep well.
