Originally a carpenter named Jumpman, this Italian plumber has gone on to become the most recognizable video game character of them all, starring in a veritable pantheon of titles like kart racing and sports. He has been voiced by Charles Martinet for nearly 20 years.
Samus Aran is the protagonist of the Metroid series. As a bounty hunter, she uses her armored power suit to hunt space pirates and other dangerous forces. She frequently crosses paths with dangerous creatures called Metroids in her adventures.
Wario is Mario's rival and doppelganger; a crude garlic-loving brute with an obsession with treasure. Wario's name is a portmanteau of the word "warui" ('bad' in Japanese) "Mario".
Luigi is Mario's brother. He began as a simple palette swap of Mario, but was later differentiated. In his later forays, he provides comic relief.
The Original Donkey Kong made his debut in the game of the same name, where he tossed barrels at his nemesis Mario. His grandson, Donkey Kong Jr., went on to create a legacy of his own in games such as Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.
One of the most iconic characters in the Metroid series. He is the Space Pirate general, and a recurring boss in the series. Ridley is Samus's arch-nemesis, and killed her parents when she was very young.
Bowser is one of the most iconic villains in gaming. His role as the main antagonist in the Mario franchise has cemented this King of Koopas' status in video game history.
Princess Peach Toadstool is usually the damsel in distress from the Mario franchise. She gets kidnapped frequently by Bowser, though she's not averse to being captured by various other villains from time to time.
Yoshi is a recurring character in the Mario franchise and has since gone on to star in his own games.
Pit is the protagonist of Nintendo's Kid Icarus series.
The final boss of Metroid and Super Metroid.
Popo and Nana, the mallet-swinging, eggplant-loving eskimos from the Ice Climber series.
Donkey Kong Jr. is, or at least has been considered, the son of the original Donkey Kong, who made his debut in the 1983 arcade classic which bore his name. He is actually a younger version of the current Donkey Kong.
The player's canine hunting companion (and erstwhile source of mockery) in Duck Hunt.
Octo, or "Scowler", was a boss character in Wario Land 3. His palette was revised in Dr. Mario 64 to avoid racially insensitive connotations, but retained the same general color scheme in Nintendo Puzzle Collection.

The main villain in Wario land 3 who manipulates Wario into releasing him from his seal. He also appears in Dr. Mario 64.
Helio is a living balloon who fights Wario with handheld arrows.
Link is the iconic protagonist of The Legend of Zelda franchise.
The main character of the classic Balloon Fight game. He is well known for his tendency to pop the balloons of nearby birds
Kraid is the reptilian-like creature from the Metroid series, he appears in several boss battles.
One of the main characters in the Famicom Tantei Club franchise, Ayumi is a member of the games' titular club. Ayumi is also a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
The foreman of the Mario's construction site, he has a bitter rivalry with Mario and Luigi.
The King of the Gods in Greek mythology, Zeus is the master of the sky. His brothers Poseidon and Hades rule the sea and the underworld, respectively.
Lakitu has appeared in a variety of Mario games; from Super Mario Bros on the NES right up to Mario Kart 7. He is responsible for dropping Spinies onto the levels below, holding up signs and his very own start signal from all nine Mario Kart games.
A very young female ninja who is the twin sister of Ana, and also quite bossy.
A mad scientist from the WarioWare series. He invents many gadgets used in the games.
Tatanga was the main villain in Super Mario Land. He also appeared as the boss of Space Zone in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Bubbles is the protagonist of Clu Clu Land.
