UPDATE:Various sources are reporting that Nintendo has confirmed that the upcoming Wii U Mario game is based on the New Super Mario Bros.-like tech demo the company showed last year. To be honest with you, I don't remember much about that demo beyond the fact that it was sort of like NSMB and it had Miis in it. I was too busy playing Chase Mii. Now where the hell is that game?

I saw this and it scarred me. The only way to fix what broke inside me was to scar everyone else I could. You're welcome, and I'm sorry.
I saw this and it scarred me. The only way to fix what broke inside me was to scar everyone else I could. You're welcome, and I'm sorry.

If I were to tell you that Nintendo plans to bring a new Super Mario Bros. game out for its upcoming Wii U console, would that honestly surprise you at all? Maybe the timing would, given that there hasn't been a real Mario game as a launch title for a Nintendo platform since Mario 64 (no, Super Mario 64 DS doesn't count). But beyond that, can you actually say you're shocked to hear of more Mario coming to more Nintendo consoles? No, I didn't think so.

With that in mind, I suppose I don't need to tell you to sit down before explaining that yes, Nintendo really does have a new Mario game in the works. Speaking to Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Mario overseer Shigeru Miyamoto evidently let slip news of the game's existence while rattling off the myriad other projects at Nintendo he's currently dabbling in, which also include a new Pikmin for the Wii U and Luigi's Mansion 2 for the 3DS.

One weird thing about the announcement is that it wasn't really an announcement. The mention of the Mario game in the newspaper report isn't even from a direct quote from Miyamoto, which gives one the impression that he just kind of mentioned it off-handedly. Normally this would be enough reason to just ignore such a story, but then Nintendo went and did something actually surprising, and confirmed the game's existence in a brief statement.

In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo," a Nintendo spokesperson said. "We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.

So, there you have it. There is totally a new Mario game coming to the Wii U. Of course, the question remains as to whether this is something that might have evolved out of the New Super Mario Bros.-esque tech demo that debuted at E3 last year, or something more designed to build off of the 3D progression seen in the Super Mario Galaxy series. We also don't know if this has anything to do with the surrounding the supposed Super Mario Bros. 4 title that Nintendo recently registered domains for.

Perhaps we'll find out all of the above at E3. Hey, I certainly wouldn't complain about a new Mario game, NSMB style or otherwise. Though if it does turn out to be Super Mario Bros. 4, it had better answer all my unresolved questions leftover from Super Mario Bros. 3. I've been waiting 20 years for them to sort out all the weird species identity issues Mario had in that game. And don't you try and tell me dressing him up in all those suits was just a colorful way to give him new abilities. There was a painfully obvious self-loathing there that read even in the face of an 8-bit sprite. It's long past time for closure, Nintendo.

Sort of the teams way of encouraging thoughtful posting (even though most people just post random letters and edit it later).

I also apologize for nabbing that first entry from you when I already have the achievement.

While they're at it, they may as well also confirm announcements of new Mario games at E3 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, etc...

It is kind of surprising, only because nintendo launch games have been pretty shitty for every platform since the n64.

err because a) that has been known for years (E3 2010 or 09 is when Miyamoto announced "we're making Pikmin!" [still as a Wii game back then]) and b) last year they announced at E3 that Pikmin 3 was moved to Wii U.

that's not making the news because these news are almost a full year old :)

Yeah man. I completed a no-death Pikmin 2 run for the sixth time last summer, and that game is still as great as it was in 2004.

Also, those saying it's been announced before, you're right; but then again, what happened to Metroid Dread?

Also, as a hardcore Nintendo fanboy it is my duty to get excited whenever the word "Pikmin" is uttered by other humans :p

Avatar image for re_player1

Not even a new Pikmin game, a series which I fucking adore, could get me excited for the WiiU. Not hating on Nintendo, I love my 3DS, just everything I read about this system seems like the Wii all over again which I got day one and has been in my closet for years. A couple games that appeal to me doesn't justify an entire system in my opinion.

Avatar image for suicrat
#38 Posted by Suicrat (3829 posts) -

O, ummm... just to clarify, that wasn't my sixth perfect run in Pikmin, it was my first, but my sixth time beating it.

Avatar image for kosayn

Yeah, this is necessary. It gets the long term fanbase and the kids to care about the new system. Hopefully it's not the game that showcases the system gimmick - I assume Pikmin is.

Since they specifically wrote 'Super Mario Bros.' instead of 'Super Mario,' I'm thinking it'll just be the logical conclusion to New Super Mario Bros. Mii demo that they showed earlier.

I've never played Pikmin, but I've heard it's like Overlord, only good, eh...and also "good". I might be up for trying the series out in that case.

As for Mario, I really like the Mario platform games, both the 2D and the 3D ones, so if they make a good one of those I'm probably in. That said, I would like to see a 3D Mario game made with 2D Mario sensibilities, meaning for instance that powerups are a luxury, not a requirement to get through a level. 3D land came so close to fullfilling that, that I can't help being hopefull that they'll put out a "real" one like that eventually.

Here's crossing my fingers and setting up for disappointment.
