Miyamoto + New Ideas = I like this.
Nintendo

Nintendo was founded in Kyoto, Japan in 1889 as a manufacturer of hanafuda playing cards. The company went through several small niche businesses before becoming a video game company.
Shigeru Miyamoto Changing Roles at Nintendo [UPDATED]
I approve of this. Get some new blood to head Mario and Zelda. Fuck, maybe this is what will give the next Zelda some voice-overs.
Good move. Allows the younger staff to bring fresh ideas to some of Nintendo's franchises and allows for new IP's to be developed. Kinda excited to see what the WiiU has in store for us.
Well considering it was Gunpei Yokoi that did the Virtual Boy....No?@MooseyMcMan
Did you expect the virtual boy?Small != bad. Hopefully it's something innovative. I expect nothing less from Miyamoto!
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what the dude comes up with. I mean he came up with Pikmin from gardening, so let's see what other hobbies the guy has.
I understand that but it would be really great to see the beautiful world of mario realised in a High Definition environment. I think the Mario art style would be enhanced in HD-an interactive cartoon if you will.@Masha2932 said:
Please make one HD game before you move on to smaller projects Mr.Miyamoto. Please!HD doesn't matter. His focus has always been on gameplay. While his games have some of the best graphics you'll ever see on any Nintendo platform, graphics aren't the reason his work is revered.
@Masha2932:
Anyhoo, if there's even the slightest parallel to be found for Miyamoto to "go small" like DoubleFine and Schafer have, god speed. Here's my money.
I feel like most of nintendo's first party releases are like well polished indie games. I think it would be in nintendo's best interest to work on some new ip's while keeping a smaller division working on fan favorites. Maybe this means new characters while miyamoto keeps working on Super Mario 27. Everyone is happy!

Guys, calm down. It was a joke about the two franchises stagnating because the people Miyamoto leaves to work on them try to cash in by doing the exact same thing for the next 10 years (you think they rehash and reuse ideas now? It could be worse; that's the crux of that part of the joke), while whatever Miyomoto goes to work on (what I referred to as the "newest IP") becomes Nintendo's next big success, because we all know that Miyomoto's projects print money.
See, the joke's not as funny when I have to explain it.

It wasn't very funny to begin with. The "lololololz NINTENDO REHASHEZ" train ran out of steam a long time ago.

I wonder what it's like being the creator of one of the most recognizable characters of all effin' time.
So it's good to see that something new and interesting might come out of Nintendo, though I'd now be worried about the future of their other flagship series that have been kept fairly fresh and interesting through the years against impossible odds, specifically the Mario franchise.
I'm not going to say that Nintendo is fucked or anything, but Nintendo is probably going to be fucked for a few years.
His legacy is unmatched, whether you're a Nintendo fanboy or not, you can't ignore it. Read up on what he's done for the industry, and probably the reason that your even on myign. Let's try to be respectful and tip our hats towards his lowered positioned in Nintendo. He may not be gone, but he's not as relevant to Nintendo now, which is still big news. Read up on why he's so important. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeru_Miyamoto
This is great! Smaller projects will allow Shiggy to be more creative, which is what I think he really wants.
Looking forward to some interesting games!
Miyamoto hasn't been intimately involved with any project since the first Pikmin. Him stepping down from his creative director status to a more direct designer role is great news to me. I'm interested to see what his first game is and if he still has the chops as a pure game designer like he used to. What type of game will he make, I wonder?

10 years later, Nintendo's newest IP is also its biggest and best, while Mario games have shown a sharp decline in quality, and a new Zelda hasn't been released since the 3DS game.
What? Did you play Galaxy 2 and 3D Land? Have you even heard of Skyward Sword? Am I being trolled here?
I second this. Miyamoto's been behind some great things, but I would rather see what he comes up with on his own, uninhibited by large dev teams and budgets. It's been a while since Pikmin.
Some people seem to be worried that this is going to cause a substantial drop in quality for Nintendo's big-budget games, and I don't understand why. Shigeru Miyamoto did not single-handedly create all of Nintendo's good games, you know. People like Takashi Tezuka (co-designer of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3 and The Legend of Zelda, director of Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, assistant director of Super Mario 64 et cetera -- the guy may not be as famous as Miyamoto, but his track record is comparable) are still going to work on the company's big titles.

Guess he realized people are waking up to the Nintendo formula. If so many other companies can make big, new IP's, I have no idea why Nintendo can't. Miyamoto may have created some iconic series, but even he needs to stop getting a pass on Nintendo's previous goodwill.
What are you talking about? The games he's been most closely associated with in recent years (Mario Galaxy, Zelda, etc.) continue to do well both critically and commercially.
Some new IP would be nice, but I doubt much originality will come from 1st party ninty titles these days. Maybe that is Miyamoto's hope, but I suspect he wants to be like notch and make another minecraft or hop on board the indie hype train.
