A 'nuke' is the explosive part of a nuclear weapon. The two main forms of nuclear weapons are Nuclear bombs which have to be dropped from a plane onto its target. The second type is a Nuclear Warhead; these are essentially smaller Nuclear Bombs that are stored in a streamlined shell and mounted to the top of a missile which can be launched and hit their target with devastating accuaracy. Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM's) are the form of missile that can carry nulear warheads to almost anywhere in the world. As the name implies they can cross continents to hit their targets. This means that every place in the world is in the range of a Nuclear Missile.
Nuclear Weapons harness their energy from nuclear reactions. In the actual explosive part of the Nuclear weapon lies a small amount of a nuclear substance usually either Uranium, Plutonium or Trtium which upon impact with the ground the substances atoms are split releasing a ferocious amount of energy that can level cities with a single nuclear strike. The atoms can also be split remotely by a small explosive in the shell of the nuclear weapon this means that the weapons can be exploded before they hit their target or just before they hit the ground, This also acts as a caution feature which means that if a Nuclear Missile is ever launched at a city by accident then the missile can be destroyed before it hits its target. One of the scariest things about the effect of Nuclear Weapons is the fallout that follows the explosion, this nuclear fallout is caused by residual nuclear particles that remain in the atmosphere for a long time after the explosion, the fallout could continue to pollute the environment for potentially enturies after the explosion. This nuclear fallout can kill humans and animals, it alters people's cells structure and can cause various cancers such as Luekemia, which will usually prove fatal due to their severity. People affected by radiation who have children, their children are more likely to have disabilities or terrible malformities.
The first form of Nuclear Weapon was the Atomic Bomb, which was replaced by the Hydrogen Bomb and then that was replaced by the Nuclear Bomb/Missile which has now been succeeded by the Thermo-Nuclear Weapons which are the most devastating of all WMD's (Weapons of Mass Destruction). In the whole of history there have only ever been two nuclear weapons used to attack a country. In August 1945 in World War 2 President Harry Truman of the United Sates of America ordered an Atomic Bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two industrial cties of Japan. These two Bombs caused the immediate deaths of over 120,000 people, mostly civilians. Japan surrenedered within two weeks of the Bombs being dropped. People argue that the bombings saved more lives than they took because they arue that the War would have gone on for much longer causing much more casualties in both sides, this still remains a very controversial topic, over 60 years later. However many more people died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki due to Radiation Sickness, Luekemia and various other illnesses caused by radiation. Many more children were also born disabled or with horrible malformities due to the radiation.
The largest Nuclear weapon ever tested was the Tsar Bomb, tested in the Novaya Zemlya in Russia in the 1960's it had a yield of 50 megatons, its fireball measured approximately 9km in diameter but its blast radius was much larger. Fat Man, the bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945, measured .015 megatons and created a fireball measuring approximately 400 metres. The energy created in the 39 nanoseconds of its reaction measured approximately 1.4% of the energy release of the sun in the same amount of time.
