The Paper Mario franchise is a hybrid RPG/platformer known for its humorous and lighthearted tone... and the paper, of course.
The Paper Mario franchise was created as the spiritual sequel to Squaresoft's Super Mario RPG The Legend of the Seven Stars. It has led Nintendo to make other Mario RPGs including the Mario & Luigi series. The first game in the series, Paper Mario, opened to excellent reviews in 2001 and had a unique twist on the standard turn-based battles of RPGs, along with a likable cast of characters and had a unique graphical twist of 2-d characters in a 3-d environment. The game followed Mario as he attempted to save the seven star spirits in order to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser and his star rod. The second game in the franchise, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, also received very good scores despite the lack of change from the original. In many ways The Thousand Year Door was similar to the original game, but it also made serious improvements in gameplay and characters that it is still one of the best RPGs of this era. The plot this time follows Mario trying to collect seven crystal stars in order to save Princess Peach(again) from an ancient demon. For the third game in the series, Super Paper Mario, the developers did some things differently. While the original two Paper Mario games had been RPGs with slight platforming elements, Super Paper Mario was a platformer with some RPG elements. It featured the unique ability for Mario to be able to flip between the 2nd and 3rd dimensions as Mario and his buddies try to save an alternate dimension from being crushed by a black hole. The game however, failed to attract scores as good as its predecessors and has been considered the black sheep of the Paper Mario franchise. Despite this change, all Paper Mario games share a few elements: amusing and charming story and characters, a group of support characters that assist Mario throughout the game, and the 3-d environments with 2-d characters.Paper Mario games
