    Overview

Para-Medic is first introduced in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater during the events of the Virtuous Mission and acts as a support character who provides Naked Snake with medical and survival advice. She reprises this support role during Operation Snake Eater and the San Hieronymo Takeover in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops many years later.

Para-Medic's codename comes from the title used for emergency units who parachuted into the battlefield in order to treat soldiers. Prior to the events of Metal Gear Solid 3, her medical colleagues gave her the nickname "Quack" in reference to her talkative nature. After the events of Operation Snake Eater, she becomes a founding member of the Patriots. At the same time, she worked vigorously to establish the United States' first paramedic system in Seattle.

In later years, Para-Medic became corrupted by the promise of power as a member of the Patriots and began research into projects with ignoble aims under her real name, Dr. Clark. Chief among these experiments was the Les Enfants Terribles Project, the experiment to create "The Sons of Big Boss" that resulted in the births of Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake.

Dr. Clark met her end prior to the events of Metal Gear Solid. After converting the destroyed body of Gray Fox into the cyborg ninja, Fox rebelled and killed her during his escape.

The Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater

A highly trained doctor, Para-Medic provides medical advice to Naked Snake during the events of Metal Gear Solid 3. She gives players instructions and advice on which medical tools to use in order to treat wounds and diseases. She also helps players survive in the wilderness by providing information on the edible flora and fauna that Snake comes across.

An avid fan of motion pictures, Para-Medic frequently references a variety of films from the mid-twentieth century when the player contacts her to save the game. During his imprisonment in Groznyj Grad, Snake has a nightmare that he is a vampire slayer named Guy Savage thanks to Para-Medic and her stories of horror movies and vampires.

Because of the debacle of the Virtuous Mission, the US government threatens to revoke Para-Medic's medical license if Operation Snake Eater ends in failure. However this threat was meaningless, since she tells Naked Snake during a codec conversation that she would gladly help him regardless of her medical license.

Aside from her regular support duties, Para-Medic also serves as a recruitable and playable character in the PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. In order to unlock her, players must contact her on the radio in the Comm Tower stage. Later in the game she needs to be rescued from a hospital. In order to recruit her, players must send spies inside in order to rescue her. Players can also unlock her with the cheat code: PM-EMS in the password menu.

During the story, she comes in contact with Naked Snake (still not using the name Big Boss) via codec once again and informs him of the crisis going on in San Hieronymo Peninsula and the state of the FOX unit. She also helps players get in touch with another old friend, Sigint.

Para-Medic is mentioned only by name in Metal Gear Solid, under the name Dr. Clark. Naomi Hunter reveals in a codec conversation that it was Dr. Clark who turned Gray Fox into the Cyborg NInja. After the events of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, she collects his body from Zanzibar Land and uses him as a guinea pig for experimental skeletal enhancement surgery. However, Gray Fox kills her during his escape with the help of his adopted sister Naomi. Gray Fox's escape was planned by EVA and Ocelot to eliminate the founding members of the Patriots in collusion with Zero.

According to Naomi, little is known about Dr. Clark since "he" was very reclusive and left no data behind after "his" death. In the dialogue of the English language version of Metal Gear Solid, Naomi refers to Dr. Clark with masculine pronouns. This resulted in a continuity error, as it wasn't until MGS4 that it was revealed that Dr. Clark and Para-Medic were one in the same. This discrepancy was explained away in the Metal Gear Solid 4 Database by indicating that Dr. Clark's reclusive nature was such that Naomi never actually met her and simply assumed that she was a man.

Dr. Clark is also responsible for the gene therapy process used to create the genome soldiers whom Solid Snake encounters during the events of Metal Gear Solid.
