An atmospheric phenomenon that causes a fantastic natural light display.
When blood will splash textures on walls or floors and even roofs.
Some creatures don't need guns or swords to hurt you. Instead they pack a punch with some kind of deadly breath attack, be it flaming, poisonous, radioactive, or just plain bad!
An insect with broad colorful wings.
An optical effect formed by beams of light contrasting against areas of shadow in the atmosphere. They are often simulated in video games through volumetric lighting.
Dust is a particle effect that usually occurs when an object or character impacts/rubs/scrapes along another object, character, or surface, creating a dust effect.
Electricity is commonly used as a damage-introducing element causing inanimate objects to become harmful (electrified water, floors, cables, etc). It can also refer to a power wielded by characters that generates sparks, is conductive to metal surfaces, forks or branches, and is often blue in color.
A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
In games, fire can be an obstacle, a tool, a weapon, or a solution. Just don't play with it...unless you really want to.
Games in which fire can spread continuously across the environment or between objects.
Fireworks are a form of incendiary rocket designed to explode "gently" in bright colours and cause no damage, traditionally set off to mark festive or historic events.
A concept found in numerous video games, the idea that a weapon on fire is more powerful or does special "burn" damage when set on fire. Most commonly found with swords, several other weapons have been known to be set on fire for a similar effect.
Fog plays an important role in many games. In games like Silent Hill, it's an atmospheric element. In other games, it's artificially added to reduce draw distances to save memory and increase framerate.
Ground Fog is low-flying fog that obscures less than 60% of the sky and doesn't extend to the base of any overhead clouds.
The smoke that rises out the barrel of a gun.
Ghostly lights that can sometimes be seen near swamps. This phenomena has been attributed to ghosts, fairies, and biogas.
Infinity Ward's game engine used in the Call of Duty series.
Basically you're given a flashlight and then sent to a dark place.
The concept of affecting the universe through supernatural methods, breaking the fundamental laws of science.
Hot, high pressure gases released from the muzzle of a firearm when fired.
For games that have neon particles aplenty, particularly when things explode.
Rain can heavily increase the atmosphere of a video game. Some games use it to add detail to an environment, while other games use it to make it difficult to see.
A cloud of fine particles.
Crunchy frozen water fallen from the sky. Many games feature a snow world, a snow level, or otherwise-connected regions of wintery landscapes.
Water vaporization usually represented in video games as a particle effect.
The Taito Z System is a 16-bit arcade system board released by Taito in 1987, debuting with racing simulation Continental Circus. It was followed by an enhanced 32-bit upgrade, the Taito SZ System, which debuted in 1992 with first-person shooter Gun Buster.
A visual obstruction is an extra layer added to the player's viewpoint. Most common in first person games to add to the notion that you are looking through a character's eyes. Obstructions include blood, water and ice crystals.
Realistically rendered water can really immerse you in a game. Just don't try to dive into your TV!
