In something that has shocked even me, I've started using my PSP a lot more lately. Some games I've found good, some bad and some just too hard.

These are the games that have been occupying my time.

Untold Legends : Brotherhood of the Blade

It's like Diablo. Just for PSP.
It's like Diablo. Just for PSP.
I know, I know, I know, I know. It's an old arse game and was a launch title (to my knowledge) but, I've had it sitting there for a long arse time and I thought I would pick it up and actually play it.

It made me think of one thing *click* *click* *click* *click*. A game which involved killing demons, who dropped loot and gold and attaching gems to weap-. Holy shit call Blizzard (Blizzard-Activision? Or is it Activision-Blizzard. I don't know or care) cause I'm sure they have a case here. Choose your class. Go out there and hack and slash your way through a kinda bland world with some bland enemies.

On the plus side, it kinda looks good still (considering it's age) and has generic hack-n-slash sounds, clink, clank, monster groan.

The story is pretty shit though and Makes me feel like there is no point in playing it.

Patapon 2

Pata-Pata-Pata-PON!
Pata-Pata-Pata-PON!
I played the first one. It wasn't a bad little RTS/Rhythm bastard child and I played it for a very time.

The premise was simple, tap some buttons in time with music. That is a a lot harder then it sounds, going from March, to Attack, to Defend is a pain in the arse, especially in Boss battles where is seem Defend does nothing. But in short, I loved the first one.

The second one I pretty much have to love aswell, but don't. It's the same thing. Their is now a Hero Unit which will do some epic damage to the enemies and some other new unit types but, it just feels more like an expansion pack then a true sequel. All the button combinations are the same (Which I spose is meant to be a good thing for older players) but the problem is, if you've played the first, you can't skip the god damn tutorials. I hate unskippable tutorials with a passion and in a game like this they seem redundant.

Storywise it isn't all that strong either with you just trying to get the Patapon to bend over and dominate everyone who isn't them.

it's the first one with the added feature of new units. You haven't missed much if you didn't pick this one up, but if you haven't played the first then maybe pick this one up and scratch out the 2 on the box. You wouldn't know the difference.

Cave Story (Homebrew)

 Mmm.... Plain.
 Mmm.... Plain.
I know this is a PC game. I know it is. I know its an awesome PC game. So I'll keep it short and sweet.

It's Cave Story. I can play it on a bus. It's the bullshit sickness.

FUCK YER!

Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do To Deserve This?

 Hardest. Game. Ever
 Hardest. Game. Ever
This game is impossibly hard and kicks you in the balls.

I was after a nice quirky little Japanese title and came across this. I wish I hadn't found it, I don't know if I suck at it or if its unbeatable but the third stage just knocks me on my arse. It pokes fun at the JRPG market which makes me laugh (they're all the same game you fuckwits and haven't evolved in 20 years), but thats about all the enjoyment I get out of it.

I sit there and voluntarily do the tutorials and it doesn't make a lick of difference. Wikipedia says it's a pain in the arse so, that makes me feel a little better. But anywho, it has an eight bitty feel to it which suits the game I think and is very pretty. The sounds I don't really care about cause the majority of the time I play with the game on mute. It's hard enough without concentrating on sounds.

The sweetest thing about this game it the god damn name.

I've played a few other games aswell and am about to try out  my first PixelJunk game and have high hopes.

Also, anyone know any good 2D platformers for a PSP without resorting to Emulation or Mega Man Powered Up or Maverick Hunter X?

Just missing out:

LocoRoco 2
Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again
MotorStorm: Arctic Edge

5. Resistance Retribution

Many people said that translating a shooter onto a portable system could not be done, the guys at Sony Bend knew otherwise. With the success of their Syphon Filter series, they took the same formula and put into this quasi sequel to the popular Resistance: Fall of Man series. Along with strong shoot and great level designs, there was a lot of reasons to play through the game more than once and the multiplayer mode was also quite enjoyable.

4. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

When a game can not only entertain you but educate you at the same time, you have something truly special. The Professor Layton in North America is still miles behind the Japanese series but this follow-up is just as enjoyable as the first with an great and engaging story. More than 150 different puzzles that will challenge you but never to the point of frustration. Here's hoping the 3rd game in the series gets to us sooner rather than later.

3. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Who said a violent game is not possible on a portable Nintendo Console? Chinatown Wars takes the series in an interesting direction with fantastic results. Combining a cool story, great missions and some interesting touch screen mechanics, this is the total package. Any GTA fan will love it and those who missed the days of the series origins are only punishing themselves by not playing this.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

It doesn't take much to release a quality Legend of Zelda title, so having one on the DS is no surprise. While fans did have their reservations and felts some parts of Phantom Hourglass were disappointing, Spirit Tracks fixes almost all of those issues and gives us such a fantastic experience. The fact that both Link and Zelda must work together puts this up there as a must-place for any fan of the long running series.

1. Patapon 2

There are games that when you first look at them you will respond with 'WTF!', the orginial Patapon was most definitely that game. Combine rhythm with strategy and you have yourself one unique experience. This follow up took everything that made the first so special and doubled it and threw in a bit more flavor. What is so great is that even with all its content, more than 30 hours worth, this only will cost you 20 dollars. For those looking for a PSP game to play, if this isn't already in your collection it should be.

Here are the games I'm planning to get (I already have Valkria)

  • Super Street Fighter 4 (It was announced really quickly)
  • UFC 2009 (Yukes should stick with Dana's Boys)
  • GT5 (Come on, I know it will not have the firebird until DLC time but hey - DAMAGE - and not the sucky kind and not "The Player should had died Burnout damage)
  • BlazBlue (Whatever new version coming out)
  • Star Ocean 4 International (PS3) (Ok, This is the Enterprise version of the franchise and some say it got worse after a certain point - but Im a completist)
  • DMC4 (duh)
  • Blitz The League (liked the first game)
  • NBA The Show (Sony has gotten better with the Baseball Game and the Basketball game is damn close)
  • Uncharted 1 and 2
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Folklore (Wanted to buy it because of the Japanese advert way back when)
  • Ratchet and Clank (And the PSP version)
  • Midnight Club LA (Played the other versions)
  • Yakuza 3 (Better than GTA4 ever was)
  • GTA4 (when they have all of the DLC the 360 has)
  • Soul Caliber 4
  • Other games such as White Knight Chronicles 1, Tekken 6, God of War Three etc

On the PSP side:

  • GTP (60 Frames, 800 cars and I hear you transfer data from there to GT5! What's not to like)
  • MGS Peace Walker: When Naked Snake becomes the bad guy.
  • Valkria 2 (when ever its ready)
  • That Bancho game what ever its called
  • Holy Badman (Dead Penguins are the new Cool Cats)
  • Patapon (UK Version)
  • Soul Caliber Broken Destiny (and sadly we cannot take Kratos to 4)
  • Persona and Persona 3 (the first game back in 96 was done in the Dawson's Creek style - in someways it made it more authentic and in other-ways it fell flat)
  • Other such games from Level 5, that will take years to translate...

That will take awhile for the PS3 side to get to 25 games (I have 30 something on the PS2 side) and more than I have for any version of the Gameboy on the PSP side (I have 15 now to add GTP later) Im gonna have to keep them in a safe place nobody will find them if you believe the conspiracies out on the net...

As for the WII... What did i tell yall? Its a damn mess I hear. Some choice info:

System Menu 4.2 seems to be bricking non-HBCed Wiis. It doesn't matter whether you've ever installed the Homebrew Channel or hacked your Wii, people who have never even heard of HBC are having these issues.

The problem appears to lie with an incredibly shoddily programmed update to boot2 of the Wii. boot2 is basically the area that "starts up" the Wii. According to the people who have developed HBC, the code for Nintendo's updated boot2 is prone to making write errors, therefore making the possibility of bricking your Wii extremely high, whether or not you have ever hacked or modified your Wii.

Here some more:

So if I'm to understand their customer service comments correctly, bricking modified Wii's is now policy rather than an unintentional but acceptable coincidence?
It's not a policy. They are just saying that it isn't their problem. The same thing as if you put your console near an edge and it dropped to the floor and broke. I don't blame them on that part. Punishing the legitimate users is something unacceptable, but they are now compensating for that too.

And some more:

The really simple version is that ECC is extra bits that can be used to get a good, error-free read even if some of the data is errored somehow.

All forms of storage—Flash, disk, whatever—have a certain tolerable amount of errors. Makes them cheaper since they don't have to junk so much in manufacturing. Using various strategies like bad block remapping and ECC, they then present a certain amount of reliable storage to the rest of the system.

As I understand it, the Nintendo update code wasn't doing ECC properly. So if your boot2 area had errors, the update was more likely to fail than with code that did write out the ECC bits properly. So, if there was some problem reading that area back, boot2 would come back corrupted.

Now im not the greatest Computer Wiz out there, but when a thing need to "Start Up" said system - to prevent homebrew or pirates, fails because the homebrewers realized that thing used to start the system is "fucked already and we don't even touch it" - and then for that same company to go and fix a problem that isnt the cause of the issue - and have it mess up non - HBC systems reeks of very bad planning. There are more complicated issues with this and you should check (not that I condone this) the many boards and forums that deal with such things.

Its proves a point I have. Ninty had us, but they didn't get us. Sony has recovered (50,000 for 4 weeks straight is still nothing to sneeze at in Japan) 360 has lower prices and is setting up Jasper (a bit too late though). This should be news right now - but give it 2 weeks -  the media is always late on these things.

But why in gods name Ninty would create a boot up system that bricks the system during an update. They had over 30 - 50 some updates during the Wii's life span with no problems. As soon as they see a chance to hurt the sons of bitch pirates... they cant even do that right.

So folks, you mean to tell me your girlfriends bought a system with 7 year old tech - for 261 bucks (ecomany of scale folks), sells 2.5 million during the bubble and now some of those wii's have the chance to brick?

Sounds like a bad investment to me. Not unlike how the media makes a mockery of your GF's.

But then again, maybe they will get it and realize Bayonetta and games like it wern't the bad boys or girls of Video Games.

Maybe the bad boys, acted like the good guys - in order to save something they lost over the decade. Maybe Endgame was always right about the Wii and we are just getting to the truth.

More later, with why I hate the Pirates - and why the Go should have waited a little "while" longer.

Nearly a year and a half after the release of the PSP original and less than a month away from the release of the sequel, PS3 owners still wait to hear rumblings of any news that Patapon or its brethren will be makings its way to the console. While Sony has made no comment on the matter I have come across a couple of discussions within the online gaming communities. I have read postings of some saying that the game is not built for a console or sarcastic remarks of people implying that the PS3 owner would want the game, but only if it was done in 3d. I feel confident in the following when I say neither of those points are correct. Not all PS3 owners fall into the category of the single minded gamer who only cares about the graphics and look of the game. I think most people would be surprised to find that your typical PS3 owner is a diverse gamer who knows what really matters and that is gameplay and depth/replayability not if the game looks pretty. With that being said I feel that the Patapon series would be a perfect fit on the PSN. With a library consisting of such games as Loco Roco and the Pixel Junk Monster and Eden series it’s pretty clear that the Patapon series would be a perfect fit. I for one hope Sony will listen to the PS3 community and bring the series over while it is still going strong.

YOUR FINEST DIGITALIZED VERSION OF THAT GAME GOOD SIR!

Welcome to my Blog folks,

While we do indeed live in an age of impressive technological advances in almost every aspect of our daily lives, from the trip to the local hospital to watching your favourite TV shows on a screen so big, that folks think your compensating for something. Yet even these wonderful advances, are always under some form of attack or often used to simply do harm to the specific industries, the companies involved in those industries and of course ourselves. I'm talking about digitalized content if you weren't sure, sometimes my rambling words get lost in the jungle of deadly nonsense. Let's not ignore the slow change to the digital form of distribution we are currently seeing for ourselves in the videogame industry. It's a topic I've also been a little unsure about, while I see it as an obviously smart form of defence against those nasty evil pirate folk. I simply can never truly see the videogame industry going digital only throughout.

A rare picture of videogame pirates doing piraty stuff.
A rare picture of videogame pirates doing piraty stuff.
The whole 'going digital' debate, which as been discussed again and again. Recently came back to my ever confused mind, with the confirmation of Sony's PSP Go! Now I have no wish to ramble on about the new PSP in this blog, but it's sudden and some might say risky decision to go digital only. Is a clear sign of the ever changing face of videogame distribution. While Sony have promise a method of UMD usage on the PSP Go! Even though there is no such UMD drive on the newest version of portable system. I think it's clear that Sony, who have been bitten by the scratchy bug of piracy more then once, feel it's about time for the industry to change to fight a bigger evil. Now as we all know, digitally delivered games are a common sight nowadays. I still find it funny thinking back to the first time I downloaded a demo for a console game, or the first time I played Geometry Wars and realized that this was the new true home of arcade gaming. Digital distribution is a part of gaming now, and for the most part it's a good thing.

There is no denying that selling games digitally does have it's advantages and we all know them well enough. But the true advantages of distributing games in this way, will not be felt if pirates can still 'pirate' the retail versions of these games. It's somewhat throwing the whole point of digitally sold games out of the window, so only a true digitalized distribution system in the videogame industry might work in stopping the evil folk torrenting the expensively produced games of today. This push would also mean the end of retail videogame sales, infact just saying that makes this whole argument kind of pointless. While there are those who would back the push towards digitally delivered games as the only means to purchase titles in our much loved industry, it would never work at this current time. Especially when one considers how important retail sales are to shops around the globe, not to mention the fact that not every gamer as an internet connection good enough to handle massive amounts of digital content.

So now is clearly not the time for this change, but I could see it being a real possibility in the years to come. Sony's attempts to make all their future games digitally available through the Playstation Store is another small step towards this possible future, but we should also not forget Sony's promise to still sell UMD versions of PSP games. But their decision to go digital won't have an immediate affect on sales or a massive affect on piracy currently badly affecting the portable system, but with gamers eventually choosing to buy a PSP Go! (hopefully once the high pricetag goes down) then a clear change might be possible in the battle against torrented videogames. It's clearly one hell of a battle for the industry, and one they might never truly win. Who knows, maybe OnLive is the future of the videogame industry as we know it.... nah probably not! But I do believe we have begun the battle, and it's still possible that the gaming industry will not be fighting alone in this war. Let's not forget that piracy affects movies, music, software and many other forms of entertainment.

Everyone as their own personal views on this debate, I'm still not sure how I feel about digitally delivered videogames. While I love the rebirth and reimaging of arcade styled games on Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Store and Wiiware. I'm not sure I'd be over the moon with having to download a specific videogame the size of a good five to eight gigabyte of content to my console or PC. Not to even consider the size requirements future harddrives would need, it's clear that there are a lot of obstacles still in it's path until it can officially become a true possibility. It may never happen, as I said previously the sale of retail games on the highstreet stores are key to the success of so many companies. Unless a code styled Patapon 2 form of retail sale is used, though even that requires a internet connection and I'd also like to mention the lack of credit or debit card usage for many online stores. Xbox Live for example does not support many of the widely available cards of the UK, issues like this would need to be solved. So it's possible that it may never happen like we think it will, maybe some new form of distribution we have yet to see will be the answer to the way we buy games in the future.

Is a digitally distributed only future an actual possibility for the industry as a whole?

Thanks for Reading,

No, these are not birthday gifts, I bought them all myself. I didn't even remember that it was my birthday until the very end, haha.

This week's episode of Distributed Failure is a bit disjointed with the "regular" show featuring only me and Rob. After that, we have a short segment of Gus and myself talking about Patapon 2 and wonders/horrors of Netflix. This is all due to Gus' attempt at becoming a "rockstar" up in good ol' Canada, but we all know that he uses the bathroom way too frequently to ever make it in the music business.

This week's "What We've Been Playing" features a wide range of games including Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, Rune Factory: Frontier, Patapon 2, Plants vs. Zombies, Legendary, Hellboy: The Science of Evil, and much more! We follow that up with some gaming news including the closure of Factor 5 studios and the possible announcement of a "slim" PS3. After that, we dive into the "Sausage Dump" and chat up some movies, as well as the Lost finale. I hope you enjoy the show and don't forget to rate us on iTunes! :)
