Before I buy this, is this upgrade worth it?

I bought a GTX 460 a little while ago, but everything I play still runs like shit on low, and it's because I have an AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+. Now, the best CPU that can fit into my motherboard is an AMD Phenom II X4 945, and I don't have the money for a CPU and a motherboard upgrade, so is upgrading to the AMD Phenom II X4 945 worth it for somebody currently on a very small budget?

Personally I would wait until you can afford the mobo/CPU upgrade. Better bang or your buck in the long run.

Yes, it's worth it. You need more cores and a faster base Mhz speed because you're basically hobbling that 460. However, what really matters are two other things: what's your motherboard and what kind of RAM is installed?

Best if you post your complete specs.

What I coincidence, I have that CPU!

It's good to go with any game I throw at it and it looks like it'll be that way for a while yet.

Yes that will work great, I have a Athlon II X4 435 (which is way worse) and that runs everything with a GTX 460.

@CL60: 5GB is a rather odd amount, how is that distributed?

A 9xx series Phenom will be a big upgrade from your current CPU, and should pair nicely with your 460, which should be fine for most games at 1080p for at least another year, probably a bit longer on less than high.

    Why not get a 965 for 30 more bucks? That's what I have. :)

He is limited by the mobo as this only supports upto a 945. Over time you could then upgrade the mobo and ram to an AM3+ mobo with 1866mhz ram and eventually swap out the 945 for an AM3+ Bulldozer CPU.

@CL60: Yes, definitely worth it. It's also the most cost effective upgrade you can possibly go for.

Nevermind. I called newegg.ca and even though their site said they had none, they had one. So I ordered it. Shipped yesterday from California. Don't know how long it's going to take to get from California to Nova Scotia.
