I kind of stole this topic from Oldschool in th DS boards but changed it to PC because that's where I play most of my strategy games. I chose SERIES instead of individual games because there would be just too many to choose from as you can see from the large pole above.

(sorry if I missed out your favourite series but I listed everything I could think of)

In terms of singular games? Starcraft or CoH.

    As a series? Total War.

Starcraft is just a single game right now...not a series.  Total War I would say wins that.

Well it had expansions so that technically makes it a series.

Homeworld, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Total War and Dungeon Keeper.  All must plays for those interested in RTS games.  I think my vote is going towards Homeworld because the others are going to get plenty of votes.  Anybody interested in RTS games should get a demo of every one of these games, nice list mracoon

I was just about to suggest adding Civilization to the list but I realised it's turn based so doesn't really fall into this list too well.

Personally, I like the Red Alert series the most (because it was one of the first games I ever played).

Starcraft all the way. Second would be Command and Conquer: Red Alert, and third would be Universe at War, when they actually release its sequel...

Warcraft because of the story behind it, would have been red alert if not for the 3rd game.

Anno 1701 looks pretty cool, especially for a 2006 game. But it's not a conventional RTS I guess.

I voted Total Annihilation.  Straight out of the box, I think Command and Conquer Generals and Warcraft 2 were probably my favorites, but Total Annihilation's community support years after its release made the game playable for quite a while.

Definitely Age of Empires.  Starcraft is brilliant, but in terms of sheer awesomeness and amount of life stolen, AoE II wins hands down.

Not a whole lot of big RTS series out there. If you combined the age of Mythology and Empires then I would vote for that, but for now my vote goes to the Total War series.

Starcraft: Brood Wars although short-lived in terms of me playing it, was fun and had a neat concept but I was never really hooked

Age of Empires I did not play extensively but I tried it out once, it was a decent game from what I got out of it.

Warcraft: The Frozen Throne is very good, near my top. I played this game for hours on end...I absolutely loved the units/style/feel. Huntress rush was cool/lame (depending on your side of the spectrum lolz). I always preferred those brutes known as Orcs though.

Rise of Nations: Thrones & Patriots I admired and actually still do for the progression through ages. I liked it far better than Age of Empires and I thought the Armageddon Clock was funny XD. The wonders were awesome too, and every race had different units.

Commandoes was the first RTS I ever played. Cant forget the skull portraits..lol. Fun factor was probably a 2/10 though, I got bored
easily with that game, but it somehow found its way onto my last computer........

Definitely Age of Empires 2. Alas, AoE3 + WC + AD ruined my AoE experience. I'm rolling with StarCraft and Warcraft 3 for now.

I dont know. I would have to say Warcraft series for me. Because Warcraft II was amazing to play both campaigns while Warcraft III gave me the most play time for money I spent on any game ever. I got the WarcraftIII Battlechest, never played the expansion and have been playing it consistently for the past 4 years. Thanks to all the custom games and bnet.

Total War series is definitely the best PC RTS series imo. The biggest and best battles of any game I've ever played. The tactics of it make perfect sense (spear + horse=certain death). You also get a good turn-based game on top the amazing battles. Truly a dynamo.

I liked the Total War series but the battles for me were just too large scale and ended up taking up a long time and I just lost interest. That's why I have yet to pick up Empire: Total War because I know it will take up a lot of my time and I don't have that kind of time to dedicate to a single game.

Agreed, Warcraft is whats best, finished all of those, warcraft was my fav, but yeah starcraft takes second, i liked the c nd c series but not the total war ones.... rome was ok but nothing special... nice scale... and i mean sure age of empires 1 and 2 were great but that new one i got bored in a week... so noooooo. But ppl who wont like warcraft are usually ppl who are biased and all like "its not realistic" warcaft is amazing because there are thousands of different playstyles. For example u pick a game like command and conquer generals, its all massing, and theres probably like 4 sensible unit choices for each races. Warcraft 3, every unit is useful for the duration of the game and the hero system encourages you not to turtle and go out and fight, there are about 20 heroes to choose from each time but about 30 overral (race limitation) where u can pick up to 3 of them and mix it all up according to your strategy.

Dude total war sucks... ppl just like it cause they think its realistic, dont get me wrong the rome one was cool and all with great effects, soundtrack, graphics, ambience, but the gameplay was bad, and really not very intuitive.... and starcraft shuld not be first... it was the greatest for its time... but right now? no its no longer the leader.
