EA caught selling F2P Tiger Woods Online as $40 Tiger Woods 12?

So EA's love for the PC platform continues, apparently, as people buying the PC version of Tiger Woods '12 found out that they didn't get what they thought they were paying for.

Instead of a port of one of the console versions of the game, with similar features, it looks like the PC version of Tiger Woods is essentially an on-disc version of the F2P Tiger Woods Online.  This is even though the game shares the same title and box art as the new game, and even had a page on EA's site suggesting that the PC version had similar features to the console version (which EA has now edited).

The graphics look the same as Tiger Woods Online, it has a similar feature set, and the multiplayer is just a 3 month trial of Tiger Woods Online.

After the controversy started, EA has apparently started OFFERING REFUNDS to PC customers who purchased the PC version.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds to me like they were trying to be shady and cheap, and are now backpedaling since they got caught.

I... I really can't believe that they would be that stupid to try and pull something like this... But I also can't see how it could have been an accident.

I wonder if the retail version contains upgrades or microtransaction currency for the online version; if so, this really isn't any different than what League of Legends did with it's retail edition.

Knowing EA, they probably didn't though, why do they have to be so evil? Just give us back Bioware please.

Are the console versions of the game that different from the F2P version?

well, I'm not at all familiar with this F2P tiger woods game(apparently F2P is the fad right now), but I'm guessing they nickel and dime you to death for new clubs, balls, golfer attire, new courses etc.

If this on disc version comes with lot's of those I really don't see a problem with this, if it's the exact same version as the F2P one with the same gear, courses and whatnot then yeah, they effed up real nice on this one.

Oooooohhhhh, that's why it seemed so familiar!  I wondered why the customization options were extremely limited, and the graphics were meh. Played TW Online back when it first launched. It sucked. No Wonder TW 12 does too.

@onarum: Is it really nickel and diming though when the entire business model is that? It's not like you payed 60 bucks for the disc (well, in this case you did, but I'm talking in general) and then you were locked out of content unless you paid 160 Microsoft Funbux. That's the entire idea, you pick out the stuff you want, nothing else.

As for this... yeesh. Inbetween this and stupid dickery when it comes to Origin, EA is really not making the best name for themselves when it comes to PC games. I have a sneaking suspicion it will come back to bite them in the ass around TOR's launch.

No problem with this, EA never said it would be like the console version of TW12. Also clothing and equipment are micro transactions on the F2P version, so I see no problem wit this.

Basically, yeah. They were doing fantastic until I dropped a cool $60 pre ordering BF3 (man, I'm still excited about playing that game... mostly)

So damn true. Its a shame, they were doing pretty good this gen by releasing great new IPs. Now they are going back downhill.

League of Legends retail pack was a good value, it was $20 and it gave you about $50 worth of ingame champions/currency.

They've been repackaging the same game with Madden year after year and selling it for 60.

I feel that's different then throwing some crappy bare bones F2P game onto a disk and claiming it's a full on game. In your example people know what they are getting every year and they keep buying it out of choice. This was them trying to trick people into thinking they were getting one thing but giving them something much much less instead. I'm honestly surprised that they are even offering a refund at all.

EA dont give a shit about what people think.

They are still selling the game through their Origin Store for 45€. If they had any dignity and care for their customers they would have stopped selling this piece of shit.
