Ive never gotten into RTS's, but I want to because I feel like I'm missing out on something. Good place to start?

I'd say start off with one of the "Craft" games from Blizzard, be it Warcraft (II or III preferred) or Starcraft. If you end up liking those start looking into more modern ones like Company of Heroes.

Hold out for the new Starcraft or the new Command & Conquer. Both of those look pretty good, and will probably turn out to be excellent. Personally I would say to avoid Dawn of War 2 among others. Red Alert 3 was okay, but i was very dissapointed.

It really depends on what you are looking for.

    1. Fun Singleplayer?
    2. Competetive multiplayer?
    3. Would you rather play a more traditional RTS, or something that tried to change the formula a little?

I think it is hard to go wrong with Warcraft 3 really.  And it must be terribly cheap by now.

If you enjoyed that, check out the Homeworld games.

I always found C&C quite simple to get into. That might be a good way to start.

Yeah I'd go for Warcraft 3, its pretty easy to get into. And even if you aren't a big RTS fan, the story and RPG elements really drive you to keep playing.

I would actually vote for Halo Wars if you got a 360.  It might not be the best RTS, but it is designed to be way simpler than its PC counterparts and also has a "My First RTS" vibe going on with it.

Halo Wars could have easily been named "Baby's First RTS". Maybe you should start there... Good luck dealing with the Halo fanboys, though.
