I'm on the fence here, so I thought I would turn to the GB brain trust for opinions. Here's the options:

I'm leaning on getting the 550 Ti. It's a few dollars more, but it's the newest card set and it has some better specs. The reason I'm on the fence is because the $40-$50 extra is a lot of money to me, and the 550 Ti specs are not a huge leap above the 460's spec. As well, I'm currently running a Nvida 680i motherboard, so I'm not sure if the 550 Ti will work with it or not.

Obviously the gtx 460 1gb, it will smoke it. I mean the weaker gtx 460 768mb is more powerful than that card.

Oh wait, the 768mb version? Well it's still stronger than that other card regardless.

If you haven't ordered yet, checkout ncix.ca, they are generally the best prices in Canada right now, and they are giving away free games with the 550(Just Cause 2 which is great, and Mafia 2), but not the 460 which may sway your decision.

I'd tend to agree that the 460 is a better card but you are much better to look at the benchmarks than comparing specs.

@Kidavenger: I checked that site out, but I really hate how it's designed. I never seem to be able to find anything when I go looking. At the end of the day I needed something to replace my old 2x 1 GB 8800 GTX Ultras since they have been overheating for about a year or two now, and it's gotten to the point that I can't play any game because they keep glitching the textures. At this point if this 460 performs as well as those did before the overheating I will be happy.

Obviously I would prefer it works better, but I have been going crazy not being able to play half the games I buy.

If you ran like two 8800GTX, why not just run two gtx 460 768mb if it's that cheap. Great value at $232 and a ton of power. I know you don't want to overspend, but honestly that's a great deal. If you get like rebate for both cards, then your getting the best deal in the world.

Well, if he's going to spend more, wouldn't one 560 be better? And it would be cheaper and use less power.

@BeachThunder: two gtx 460 768mb will smoke a gtx 560. Look a gtx 460 2 win is the exact same power as a gtx 580. You are probally getting something a bit more powerful than a gtx 570 for what, only $140 if he gets the rebates?

     http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130626&cm_re=gtx_460_2_win-_-14-130-626-_-Product

Look at this shit, framerates are like through the roof.

Well the op can buy whatever he wants, I suggest to him the gtx 560 instead, but this is actually cheaper and you get more power. Also it's perfect to replace the sli cards with something way better.

as a last resort you could try refurbishing those 8800's

open em up and clean out all the dust , remove the cooler , clean out the thermal paste and apply some ac5.
do you have anything to loose?
