    Hi all,

Was hoping I could get some help. A friend of mine just upgraded his gaming laptop, and gave me his old one. I’ve been without a PC I could game on for a few years. The laptop isn’t super to of the line (runs Diablo 3 well enough) but its perfect for now. I’ve been mostly wanting to play Indie games, but when I go to Steam I’m a little bit overwhelmed on where to start.

What are your “must play” indie games?

Magicka, Jamestown, Puzzle Agent 1 and 2, and Terraria are all really good PC only games you might have missed that are mostly indie. I know Puzzle Agent isn't but it's not super well known.

I'm always trying to shove Bastion down people's throats, so that. AlisterCat's suggestion is great too, Binding of Isaac's fun and the little story to it is pretty funny.

I second all of the above, and would like to add Frozen Synapse to the list. Also Super Meat Boy if you've never played it.

I was gonna say Super Meat Boy, but you know... Avatar.

If you have a casual interest in bullet hell, Jamestown is perfect. It's easier to get into than most of the genre. And it has amazing presentation.

Binding of Isaac is good fun for many hours, as long as losing progress isn't something that makes you MAAAAAD.

If you are a fan of SMB, maybe VVVVV might be good. It has a sling of metroidvania though, that puts some people off.

Same goes for Aquaria, but that is more than a sling. If you like stuff like Metroid or Symphony of the Night, it might give you some amusement. Slow start though.

Might as well plug Braid, Bastion and Limbo as well, but I figure you've played them on 360?

There are a bunch of smaller fun stuff that you can kind of mindlessly play. Like Audiosurf, Waves, Beat Hazard. Check these out, they are good for 10min or so of random entertainment every once in a while.

    Thank you everyone!

I have played SMB, Limbo, Braid and Bastion on the 360. Loved all of them..

VVVVV looks right up my alley, as does the Binding of Isaac.

All of these suggestions are great. Keep an eye out on Steam for sales; one should be able to pick up the majority of these titles on the cheap.

Team Fortress 2 is old enough that it should run fine on moderate settings, plus it's free-to-play and still has a huge community.

@Zrais: Cool, they are both great games.

I'd like to plug Jamestown again though. It's turned a lot of people from despising bullet hell games. And consideringwhat you seem interested in, punishing skillbased games should be a good fit.

@TobbRobb: With a recommendation like that, I surely will check it out.

    • SpaceChem - a tough but extremely rewarding puzzler
    • Machinarium - a very charming adventure game
    • Dungeons of Dredmor - a Rogue-like with a great sense of humour
    • Beat Hazard - a rhythm based twin-stick shooter
    • Torchlight - a Diablo-esque dungeon crawler (runs great on low spec laptops)

I also second/third recommendations for Super Meat Boy, Braid, VVVVVV, Binding of Isaac, Jamestown, Bastion and Bit.trip (specifically Bit.trip Runner)
