Ive been having a hard time finding an RPG to really get into. If you guys have any suggestions on something to check out that would be great. The age of the game doesn't really matter, as long as it isn't ancient. Also I've played Oblivion, Mass Effect, and the Fallout series, so no need to mention those. Nothing turn based either.

If you've got a 360 I'd recommend Tales of Vesperia.  It's not turn based, the dialogue is really well done (in terms of voice acting and script) and there's enough game play to keep you satisfied.  I'm about 30 hours deep and am having a really good time.  You just have to remember that this is a JRPG and it gets a little ridiculous at times, but other then that it's pretty awesome.

If you want an RPG to get into, I don't know why you'd pass up Dragon Age.

Dragon Age has been really fucking awesome so far. Don't be afraid to check it out.

If you're looking for something cheaper, how far back are you willing to go? Have you played the classic (like Baulders Gate or Planescape: Torment)? What about Morrowind? Looking for something more action oriented? Try Diablo. If you're willing to try something a little more hardcore, try Mount&Blade.

I recommend Dragon Quest VIII if you own a PS2.

EDIT:  Shit, just noticed this is in the PC forum.  My bad.

I would easily recommend, The Witcher Enhanced Edition - PC (Action Role Playing Game)

The sequel, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, looks awesome and is due out on PC and consoles next year:

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines for some of the best dialogue and characters but crappy combat.
Planescape: Torment for quality writing and story.
Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer for quality all-around.
Dragon Age: Origins if you want to play the best game BioWare has made since Knights of the Old Republic
The Witcher if you're a misogynistic dillweed and if you like a good story and alright combat.

Right now, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is only $2.50/£1.74 on Steam. I've heard nothing but good things about it, so it seems like it'd be well worth a purchase at that price. It's only for today, mind, so you'll have to act fast!

The Witcher. It is a glimpse into the next age of PC RPGs. Dragon Age is a rehash of worn out gameplay straight out of the mid 90's. Their subliminal advertising that "This is the New Shit" using Marilyn Manson couldn't be farther from the truth. The Witcher is that new shit.

Also some people consider STALKER more of a RPG than Borderlands even though it is very much a shooter.

It surprises me that in such a broad medium there isn't room for more than one style of rpg.

There are a lot of shooter hybrids, Borderlands, Deus Ex, Bioshock, etc. Also, Torchlight if you like Diablo style games.

When did I imply anything like that? I just meant that the Dragon Age style has been explored thoroughly before.

Oh, nobody's mentioned Arcanum, my favorite CRPG of all time. And there's Temple of Elemental Evil if you're into pen and paper style D&D games but hate the actual pen and paper and imagination. Both from the late great Troika games.

...until everybody stopped buying them at the turn of the millennium and the whole market for the genre tanked. It's just now getting a chance to reposition itself.

Personally, you can't go wrong with the RPG-7

    No Caption Provided

But if you want to hit armored targets, go with the RPG-29

    No Caption Provided

But if all else fails hit em with Dragon Age.

    Planescape Torment
    Neverwinter Nights
    Baldurs Gate
    Icewind Dale

..All pretty old, but definitely worth your time checking out if you haven't played them before, as well as the first two Fallout games if you only played the third.
I'd also highly recommend the Witcher and Morrowind - which was an infinitely superior game to Oblivion in all but a few regards.

Somebody also mentioned Neverwinter Nights 2..  and although it's actually a really good game, I'd have to recommend against it for the simple reason of..  it doesn't work.  AT ALL.
Even if you can somehow get your computer to run it at a decent frame rate, there's so many technical issues, awkward control moments and hiccups, it just really isn't worth it.

Got nothing to do with the mechanics, I'd argue. The tactical combat of the D&D derivative still has its appeal.

Definitely The Witcher.  I'm enjoying Dragon Age well enough (though I have plenty of problems with it, which I won't go into here), but it ain't got nothin' on The Witcher.

If age really doesn't concern you then give Deus Ex a shot.

Edit:  Forgot to say, KOTOR is dirt cheap (as in 'almost free') on Steam for the next few hours.  You should definitely play that if you haven't already.
