Nvidia or ATI
I think its kind of silly to be a fanboy of either. Nvidia used to be known for having the best driver support, now they are the worst. Nvidia had the best bang for the buck when the 8800gt came out, now a 200 dollar ati card outperforms a 350 dollar nvidia one, Ati totally screwed up with their first line of 'hd' cards, outperformed by Nvidia by a huge margin. This question's answer pretty much changes every 3-6 months, they keep leapfrogging each other. As for me, I've got an ATI x1950gt from sapphire that I picked up for 130 bucks, it plays anything that has come out on 360 and been ported to PC, and probably kicks out somewhat superior gfx. (I've got Mass Effect running at max settings and 1280x1024) Besides the fact that I have to take it apart and clean the dust bunnies out of it every 6 months I couldn't be happier with it. At the time it was either that or a 7600, which would be totally choking on Mass Effect if I'd gone that route, same price, far inferior card. ATI is the way to go right now, but I'm sure Nvidia will counter punch soon.
I've been with Nvidia since the TNT 2 M64, both perform well, ATi isn't bad; they are great, but I'm more comfortable sticking to what I know, which is Nvidia. One thing I was disappointed was the aquisition of ATi on AMD's part, I'm hoping it doesn't bite AMD in the ass later on, since I'm also an AMD user and am hoping AMD continues nForce chipsets but I doubt that'll last much longer.
"Nvidia is always ahead of ATI in terms of power for the most part, but people having problems with nvidia cards are way more common than ati cards. I've always gone with nvidia though and never really expierienced any problem.
"
No, in the X19xx vs 7 series days the ATI cards performed exceedingly better it was only really with the 8 series that nvidia out performed them.
nvidia ... but maybe ATi if they get their heads out of their asses and stop releasing underpowered cards with better technology on them.
The latest and greatest memory on a card that doesn't touch nvidia's slowest card in performance just feels like a waste to me ... AMD needs to stick a foot up someone's ass at ATi and get someone in there that knows how to market their products.
