PC Game DRM Database

#1 Posted by guynamedbilly (52 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I rarely visit the forums here though I've been a member for a while so I hope this topic is ok.

I've created a website using Google services to host a PC Game DRM Database. There is a submission form so that anyone can add an entry, and there are several hundred games already included.

This isn't for any sort of profit. I made it because I was looking for a database like this and no one else had anything like it. I'm sure a lot of my fellow pc gamers would be interested in it as well.

The website is at www.drmdatabase.net

I think the first post and post after yours are self evident. It's a useful idea.

Most of the stores don't bother to give accurate information about the DRM releasing with the games, so this will hopefully help people from getting any DRM on their system that they don't want. If you don't care what else publishers include with their games, this probably wouldn't be useful.

You can search for a lot of this information easily by just typing the game name and "drm" in Google, but you could say the same about all of the information collected on Giantbomb. Hopefully this will just be easier for some people.

I think this is a fantastic idea. I will spread the word around. Thanks for all the trouble you are taking to do this!

Very neat, I like it although I rarely purchase a game without a little research first. Will contribute when I can :)

How many years in a room with no doors and no windows have you spent putting this together?  +1

Why not add the DRM to the system requirements on the GB wiki?

I hate splintered information.

Why not copy and paste it yourself? I hate people who complain and do nothing.

@SeriouslyNow: I have no idea if that sort of thing is even wanted in the GB wiki. That is why I said it out loud. I like the GB wiki because a lot of info is put in one place.

I have no use for a drm database, but proposing a website to collect this sort of data seems odd when there is a huge database on the site you are posting on. I am not complaining about the lack or drm info in the GB wiki, I am saying if people want it, go do it. Don't use an external source for such specific information.

It also seems odd to complain about something you have no use for. Sigh.

@MrOldboy: The DRM for a game could be different on every platform it's released on. For instance, the Steam version using just Steamworks, Direct2Drive using SecuROM, and Gamersgate being DRM free. I think the information would be too abstract and nonuniform to join the GB databases. If someone wanted to try though, no problems here. Actually one of the links on the database page opens it directly in Docs so someone can download the values however they wish.
