If you have an old laptop, say a Dell( yes, I know) Latitude D600. Is it possible to update it with new hardware to the point where it works like a new notebook?

Yes, but its very very difficult. Its not worth the haslle. Some stuff is easily upgratable on some laptops e.g. hard drives and RAM, but a major overhaul of the whole system is just so hard its not worth the hassle.

You could but it wouldn`t be even upgrading and it would cost alot more then a brand new laptop, you would have to pull out all the parts and put brand news ones in which is very difficult, your better off buying a new laptop.

The rule with laptops is that they are far more expensive than a pc equivalent, cannot be upgraded but that is offset by their mobility and their battery life, in other words the laptop you get cannot be upgraded, unless its something small like the hard drive or more RAM, but generally speaking this would be very expensive pieces and its most of the times cheaper to get a new laptop.

Upgrading laptops isn't always the easiest thing, I would just get a desktop so that later it is upgradeable.

Honestly, if you really want to be serious about PC gaming you're better off with a desktop PC. You'll have many, many more options and the cost will be dramatically cheaper.

I did read about an external video card that talks to the laptop via the PC Card slot.  Not sure if that's very economical though.  The performance is limited by the bandwidth of the slot itself.  If you really want a good, but affordable, gaming rig check out the latest line from Gateway.  Good parts and doesn't cost an arm/leg.
