    i currently have a 2.8 GHZ CPU, 1GB RAM, 500GB HDD and a Nvida GeForce 6600 GT.
In a couple years I want to buy a very nice gaming PC, but in the mean time I want to upgrade my graphics card. What is the best thing I can put into it or is it even worth it?

Probably the Sapphire Radeon HD 3850.

But I would just upgrade to a PCI express card if I were you...

Is there a way to do that without changing the mother board?

Nope, if you have an AGP slot you are almost certainly lacking a PCI-E slot (there were some dual ones for awhile...but they were way expensive and not popular .

You should note that most decent AGP cards are overpriced due to the low demand of them. I'd suggest checking out a site like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com, they have a pretty good selection of them still.

the best AGP card IMO is the 7800GS (Nvidia); but because its the best of the last gen tech, you are better off going all the way and upgrade to PCI (meaning new motherboard, which in turn means new CPU).

You are better off just saving up a few years and going all out. the amount of money you spend now to get a 7800gs is probably not worth it even if you get 2 more years out of the comp.

    My rig is:
    3.2 gHz CPU
    1.5 gig Ram
    and the nvidia 7800GS.

My comp is now 5 years old and this rig is about retired when it comes to gaming; unless its lan gaming which is always old school games like CS, starcraft, etc. Of course I upgraded my graphics car from a 5700 FX, so it was very much worth it to me, back like two years ago. But now... probably not.
